Summary of Duties:


This Plant tech 2 position serve as a skilled technical specialist supporting germplasm regeneration and natural resource research in the Department of Crop and Soils Sciences. Positions perform a wide variety of technical operations in accordance with defined procedures. Position assist with experiments to their completion or cooperatively plan and execute studies with new materials following previously established protocols under general direction. This position is responsible for assisting with any and all stages of germplasm management such as: seed propagation, weed management, harvest, caging, monitoring, cleaning, and proper placement procedure of germplasm into storage facilities. Priority will be placed on demands of seed germination facility and requests for assistance to the Unit's Farm Manager, Curators and Research Associates will be scheduled through the Farm Manager.




30% | Seed Storage and Germination




  • Assist with packaging seed for distribution and storage and entering appropriate data in the GRIN Global database under the supervision of the Seed Storage Technician.




  • Communicate with Curators and Researchers as to quality and quantities.




  • Fill seed orders received and prepared by Seed Storage Technician.




  • Update and clean samples to improve integrity of germplasm collections.




  • Fill pre-made distribution packets.




  • Evaluate and help to maintain safety equipment in compliance with Federal, State, and WSU policies and procedures.






30% | Seed Cleaning




  • Assist Seed Cleaning Technician with threshing and cleaning of seed through the use of various threshers, sieves, blowers and other seed cleaning equipment following established protocols and procedures.




  • Safely operate, clean, and maintain various threshers, sieves, blowers and other seed cleaning equipment under the supervision of the Seed Cleaning Technician.




  • Occasionally assist the Seed Cleaning Technician with researching, testing and establishing new seed cleaning procedures as the need arises.




  • Record and report issues with crops to the Seed Cleaning Technician and to Curatorial staff as directed.




  • Evaluate and help to maintain safety equipment in compliance with Federal, State, and WSU policies and procedures.




  • Maintain and record data (accession number, weight, location seed originated, etc.) of all entries to be stored in the Seed Storage Facility.




  • Document and accurately label all seed samples for cleaning and seed storage






25% | Field Maintenance




  • Assist with the planting and maintenance of plant and seed regeneration in the field.




  • Assist Plant Tech 3 with hand hoeing plots at both Pullman and Central ferry research stations.




  • Assist with monitoring for weed, insect pressure and report to Farm Manager.






10% | Documentation




  • Take notes of crop condition and weed/pest populations.




  • Notify curators and researchers of crop conditions and help determine actions to be taken to ensure crop meets desired results.






5% | Other




  • Perform other duties as required.







Required Qualifications:


High School graduation or GED certificate AND three years of work experience in plant research, propagation, or related work; OR equivalent education/experience.




  • College training in one of the plant sciences may be substituted, year-for-year, for required experience. One year of additional experience in plant research may be substituted for high school education.




  • Must have, or able to obtain, a valid driver's license.




  • Must have the ability to work in an outdoor environment for an entire work shift with exposure to hot and cold weather conditions.







Preferred Qualifications:




  • Associate Degree in related field.




  • Experience working with and knowledge of plant disease and soil nutrition symptoms.
