What We Need From You

Barnes Healthcare Services is seeking a Retail Staff Pharmacist, you have a critical role at the forefront of providing personalized high-quality pharmaceutical care by modeling BHCS values, and demonstrating genuine, authentic care for our patients. In addition to supporting the PIC and Pharmacy Operations Manager, you are responsible for assisting in leading the pharmacy team; including the oversight of all aspects of pharmacy operations while maintaining compliance with applicable state and federal regulations. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity, flexibility, and latitude is expected. An individual in this position should consider additional clinical development by obtaining a BPS Certification; Geriatrics, Diabetes, Pharmacotherapy, or a multidisciplinary certification as an Asthma or Diabetes Educator.   


  • Reviews and validates technician data entry to ensure accuracy of prescriptions which include patient information (demographics, drug allergies, and pharmaceutical history) and prescription orders in the computer for processing.   

  • Maintains established procedures concerning dispensing, quality assurance, ordering, and security of controlled substances, reporting, and disposal. Maintains appropriate documentation as required by State and Federal laws.  

  • Accurately fills and dispenses prescriptions pursuant to a valid order according to the applicable laws and regulations. Reviews medication orders for accuracy and assures standards for safe medication practices - The Five Rights: patient, drug, time, dose, and route. Performs patient medication profile review for drug interactions, duplication of therapy, and allergies.   

  • Educates patients on medication administration, treatment expectations, strategies for minimizing or mitigating potential side effects, and the importance of medication adherence.  Discerns patient understanding of therapy and educates as appropriate to keep customers and patients healthy through adoption and management of patient care programs.  

  • Utilizes MTM, adherence, and therapy-driven companion software to document patient care program interventions.   

  • Acts as a Health Coach to analyze and address patient health behaviors to maximize the good and minimize the bad, all while developing a “new normal” of a healthy lifestyle that is comfortable, natural, and sustainable for each person.  

  • Identify patients who are in target groups for certain vaccinations. Educate them about the facts and the significant risks associated with not being vaccinated. Administers immunizations according to standard protocols and documents.  

  • Works in partnership with patients and referral sources to build emotional engagement and promote customer advocacy. Simplifies medication and treatment complexity. Integrates internal efforts to deliver an optimal customer experience.  

  • Verify prescription orders with physician/provider when it is unclear or potentially harmful for a patient, or to confirm the dosage, duration, and formulation (e.g., liquid or tablet), as well as whether brand name product versus generic equivalent. Educate health providers regarding new and existing medications and drug therapy protocols.  

  • Maintains applicable pharmacist licensure(s) including necessary Continuing Education requirements, without lapse (any lapse excludes pharmacists from practicing pharmacy).  

  • Assure compliance with company procedures and internal controls necessary to comply with federal regulations and company policy to guarantee compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations  

  • Seeks additional clinical development by obtaining a BPS Certification or multidisciplinary certification/credentialing which will promote individual, departmental, and organizational growth to support patient care programs.  

  • Gains additional pharmaceutical knowledge by attending local, state, and regional events and routinely monitors industry publications and websites as well as the professional media, literature, and peer review journals. Shares pertinent knowledge and information with the pharmacy team at the weekly meetings.  

  • Reviews and supervises the work completed by pharmacy technicians engaged in all areas of the prescription process including processing, filling, labeling, packaging, and claim submission of pharmaceuticals.  

  • Supports the organizational leadership by actively seeking out and identifying methods to improve productivity, offer solutions, and support organizational goals and objectives by attending and being actively involved in the team and departmental meetings and training sessions.   

  •  Acts as a team leader and mentor for one to two (1-2) pharmacy staff members, offering direction, encouragement, and support daily; focusing on the development of pharmacy staff knowledge, skills, and abilities.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 


  • Demonstrated ability to oversee the work of and mentor pharmacy technicians, student interns, and residents as well as being actively involved in hiring decisions and setting and enforcing workplace policies.  

  • The ability to verify patient orders for completeness and accuracy before being dispensed. Performs prospective drug utilization review, therapy monitoring, and clinical-based intervention as necessary on drug dosing, drug administration, drug interactions, side effects allergies, interactions, contraindications, and monitoring issues.  

  • Exhibits a thorough understanding and knowledge of standard retail medication and OTC products coupled with the ability to interpret common laboratory values and perform advanced pharmaceutical calculations.  

  • Demonstrated ability to engage patients on how and when to take doses, follow up with patients to see if medications are working, sharing tips on how to minimize side effects while maximizing benefits. Listen to all of a patient's concerns.  

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate patients as a health coach. Educate and assist patients to be actively involved in their lifestyle choices and disease state progression via education and coaching both in-person and telephonically.  

  • Proven ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion with minimal instructions. Utilizing strong evidence-based clinical skills and good judgment with regard to patient care and treatment.  

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain an effective, respectful working environment within the pharmacy and external partners This role requires the requisite skills and the abilities to work at all levels within the pharmacy, from referral sources and patients to the pharmacy team and nursing staff.  

  • Proven ability to work successfully within an efficient organization. Must be detail-oriented and possess the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work as an active team member through change.  

  • Demonstrated ability to work as both a leader and follower on cross-functional teams utilizing delegation skills and following up on the completion of tasks. Utilizes a performance review process as a mechanism to achieve goals  

  • Exhibits a thorough understanding of Barnes Healthcare Services' organizational principles associated with the coordination of patient care, and operational relationships particularly management, education, and administrative relationships as well as the ability to apply them soundly.  

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work enthusiastically in a constantly changing environment while generating enthusiasm and competence in others by utilizing proper time management and proven motivational techniques while affirming the contribution of each team member to the delivery of patient care and services. Leads by example while possessing empathy for others in a balanced work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) is strongly preferred, may consider an experienced Retail Registered Pharmacist (RPh).  

  • 1-2 years of retail or clinic-based pharmacist experience required. Knowledge of RX30 software is a plus.  

  • Immunization and Medication Therapy Management (MTM) certified or able to obtain within 60 days. 

  • Active Pharmacist License in the State in which you are employed or ability to obtain license within 30 days; graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. 

  • May be required to obtain a pharmacist license in multiple states.  

  • Not on the DEA excluded parties list.
