Summary 

Data Services is the team within ECA which manages and shepherds data through the entire lifecycle of a class action or similar matter, such as a mass tort claim. Each case, while unique, undergoes a similar lifecycle and series of operations, including initial gathering/scrubbing/loading of client data, notifying potential class members, receiving claim information, computing and disbursing settlement amounts, and so on. Each of these steps will be reflected by and/or have material effect on the underlying case data.  

The Data Services team consists of SQL developers, Data Analysts, Business System Analysts, QA Analysts and Reporting Analysts.  These are the core roles responsible for executing our cases.

 

We have four different levels of SQL Developers – I, II, Senior and Lead.  The core job functions are the same – our SQL Developers start with a template database and from there they develop database queries/scripts/ETL to manage the data flow for a case.  In order to be successful it is expected that you are proficient with relational database concepts and practices, are able to evaluate and write SQL queries, and can create and maintain common database objects such as views, stored procedures, and user-defined functions.  Additionally, you should be able to utilize code management and/or revision control tools and follow standard software development practices at an expert level. The majority of time is spent developing and refining ETL processes, writing update queries, and writing ad-hoc queries on behalf of clients and stakeholders. 

 

As a level I SQL Developer you have experience:

·         With Microsoft SQL server and SQL based queries

·         With source control

·         With MS SQL database development

·         Using indexes, common table expressions, temp tables to optimize large SQL queries

·         Creating tables and stored procedures, as well as best practices to creating tables and stored procedures

·         Able to use SSIS and SSRS

 

As a level I SQL Developer your primary focus will be on cases with data sets of less than 500,000 claimants.

 

 

 

Epiq uses an internally developed tool to measure progress called Level Based Progression to move to a level II developer you will have collected a total of 4,000 tokens, your Productivity index will be 6 or higher, your Utility Index will be 8 or higher, your Quality Index will be 3 or higher and your Reliability Index will be 5 or greater.

 

As a level II SQL Developer you have mastered all items listed for a Level I and additionally you are proficient:

·         In SQL Server database administration and data modeling

·         With MS SQL database development for optimized query performance on OLTP databases

·         Able to present complex and/or technical material in an understandable manner to technical/non-technical audiences and decision-makers to aid them in their decisions

·         Adhere to published coding standards and documentation requirements.

 

To become eligible to be Sr. SQL Developer you will have collected a total of 8,000 tokens, your Productivity index will be 8 or higher, your Utility Index will be 10 or higher, your Quality Index will be 4 or higher and your Reliability Index will be 7 or greater.

 

In addition to meeting the Level Based Progression requirements you will need to meet the following requirements.  Again, these are in addition to those listed for a level I and II SQL developer.

 

·         Able to write and optimize in-application SQL statements

·         Ensure performance, security and availability of databases

·         Knowledge of best practices and database-design when dealing with Relational Databases (OLTP Systems)

·         Capable of troubleshooting common database issues

·         Proactively analyze, assess, and identify problematic areas of batch processing, production jobs, and production workflow; work to address the issues you’ve identified, helping to make our solutions more robust and stable.

·         Evaluate data quality processes and resolve data quality issues.

·         Conduct code walkthroughs, peer reviews, and produce technical documentation.

 

 

Qualifications  

 

Level I:  

·         BS Computer Science or related disciplines, or related experience

·         3+ years hands-on experience with MS SQL Server, 2008 R2 or higher, as a developer. 

·         Competent SQL skills, able to create and to evaluate SQL statements involving numerous tables and complex relationships. 

·         Ability to work in an environment with deadlines and shifting priorities. 

·         Basic understanding of and experience with query performance tuning. 

·         Experience developing and maintaining ETL procedures. 

·         Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; able to adjust for intended audience. Fluency in English.
