PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for routine testing of biological specimens. This position also provides skilled technical support in the laboratory. Continuous, progressive experience and competency in all aspects of laboratory functions. Additional responsibilities to include administrative tasks such as lead, project, and deviation management. Works with other team members to ensure timely, quality, test results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations. Brings compliance issues to the attention of management.
Provide value for the customer by supporting departmental and individual goal achievement, effective communications, process improvement and compliance.
Demonstrate respect for all team members by seeking input on processes and problem solving, communicating key information, collaborative teamwork and supporting a culture of diversity.
Maintains accurate records and documentation. Ensures maintenance of donor, patient and employee confidentiality.
Performs preparation and prequalification of reagents and routine testing of biological samples. Assists with monitoring supply and reagent levels and takes appropriate action when new supplies are needed.
Performs preventive maintenance, calibration, and quality control on equipment, identifies equipment malfunctions, performs trouble shooting and basic repairs, and notifies appropriate personnel as needed.
Performs evaluations of reagents, equipment, and new testing methods, as directed.
Performs training, observations, competency assessment and completes documentation.
Participates in technical investigative studies; evaluates and participates in selection of new equipment develops validation protocols.
Performs all other duties, at the discretion of management, as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge/Education
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, medical technology or clinical laboratory science required.
Must satisfy CLIA requirements for High Complexity Testing required.
For those acting in a supervisory capacity that is regulated by state of New York (NYS) requirements then a Bachelor’s Degree with 6 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience is required.
Licenses/Certifications
NOTE: Requirements vary based on the specific laboratory or state.
State licensure (as required by regulations).
Certification as a Medical Technologist or Blood Banking Technologist (BB) by a recognized certifying agency required.
Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) preferred.
Experience
NOTE: Requirements vary based on the specific laboratory or state.
Three years laboratory testing experience required.
One year of Reference Lab/IRL experience preferred
Two years of experience in a lead or charge capacity required.
Experience in developing and conducting formal training preferred.
Experience with LIS/BECs software programs preferred.
