The Department of Physiology and Biophysics has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Post-Doctoral Associate. The Post Doctoral Associate performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of a Principal Investigator. The NIH-funded project combines in vivo scanning laser confocal Ca imaging with molecular biological approaches to study the neural circuits that encode peripheral sensory processing in taste. Our ultimate goal is to understand how chemosensory, mechanosensory, and thermosensory mechanisms interact to transmit gustatory information to the brain.

Core Job Functions

  • Conducts research on specific areas of study as assigned.

  • Conducts experiments in collaboration with and training by the PI/Collaborator.

  • Maintain a laboratory notebook; analyze data using ImageJ, MatLab, Excel, and related software; present research seminars; and write reports/publications.

  • Contribute actively to group discussions at lab meetings and be cognizant of responsible conduct in research.

  • Prepares research reports and technical papers for publishing.

  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.

  • Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.

  • Develops advanced analytical models and systems and provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Ph.D. in relevant field. Ph.D. or DVM in neuroscience or closely related field.


  • Laboratory research with publications in electrophysiology and/or functional neuronal imaging, preferred.

  • Cellular neurobiology or functional imaging at the cellular level (e.g., Fura2, GCaMP imaging). Have first- or senior-authored publications/presentations vouching for this experience, preferred.

  • An early-stage postdoctoral trainee, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Patch clamp/microelectrode electrophysiology or calcium imaging or both.

  • Small animal surgery or dissection.

  • Writing skills.

  • Ability to present and discuss.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Enthusiasm and curiosity.

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
