Job Description Summary:
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully building and managing rapidly growing, world-class SRE organizations in large-scale environments. S/he should have demonstrated the ability to deliver in a hyper-growth environment and be familiar with challenges inherent to this type of growth. The Senior Director, Site Reliability Engineering should have direct experience building (preferably large scale) highly available services with a focus on scalability and reliability. The right candidate will have a history of being a hands-on leader, either in a startup or growth stage company. S/he should have 8+ years of experience in production/site reliability engineering while leading a team of 50+, or relevant similar experience.


Specifically, s/he will be an innovative, intellectually curious, and strong problem solver who stays current on modern solutions and best practices. S/he will participate, contribute and drive technical discussions when necessary. This candidate does not need to have the "correct" answer to everything, but rather should be able to drive the conversation toward a productive solution by including all the right stakeholders, weighing pros/cons, business needs, timelines, etc. S/he should have the ability to question the status quo and identify opportunities for innovation and change. In addition to technical acumen and experience with service/apps of high demand, this role requires someone who has individual experience in structuring organizations and optimizing them for execution, as well as participating in recruiting and building teams.


The Senior Director, Site Reliability Engineering will be responsible for the following:
•Manage portions of PayPal's 24x7, always-available applications and infrastructure to meet the high traffic needs, and strive to eliminate downtime, improve reliability, and improve the manageability of its services
•Build and manage a world-class team of managers and engineers capable of scaling with PayPal through a period of continued high-growth
•Attract top tier talent to match this level of growth
•Manage and mentor portions of the existing SRE team and able to manage "rock stars"
•Measure and improve efficiency and effectiveness of processes that are working well and build the next level of improvements; set standards for deployments at scale, application and infrastructure reliability and scalability
•Continue to improve on a thriving engineering culture across all tech functions; build and lead an organization with customer focus, world class quality, effective communication, decisive, fast moving solutions, quick and constructive resolutions of conflicts, and a "no barriers" mentality
•Serve as an evangelist for the team and overall culture, both internally and externally

Qualifications:



  • Minimum of 8+ years of successfully building and managing rapidly growing, world-class Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) organizations in large-scale environments.

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience building a large-scale service and SRE operations with a focus on scalability and reliability.

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience in production/site reliability engineering while leading a team of 50+, or relevant similar experience.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of work performance and personal competencies in the following areas:

    • The inclination to seek and analyze data from a variety of sources to support decisions and to align others with the organization's overall strategy.

  • This individual must have a technical undergraduate degree (bachelor in computer science, engineering, mathematics).
