Position Summary:

The Machine Shop Supervisor will oversee the Machine Shop located in GJL, where the annual operations involve more than 200 students and a dozen faculty/staff engaged in all aspects of prototype realization. The Machine Shop Supervisor must exercise highly complex machining, fabrication, and assembly capabilities to produce in-house prototypes, meet academic and research needs, and directly supervise students who work in the shop to cultivate a safe and enriched learning environment. They must also be available for consulting with students and faculty on issues associated with design for manufacturing along with equipment availability, scheduling, and budgeting. Responsibilities also include maintaining all shop equipment and providing leadership in suggesting as well as implementing shop infrastructure improvements. Collaborating with other faculty, staff, and shop personnel across campus to meet external fabrication needs and implement institutional mandates for health, safety, environmental protection, and state-of-the-art fabrication capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7 years of machinist work, preferably in research and development
  • Associates Degree in a related field, or completion of related technical or vocational education/training
  • Experience in managing machine shop operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various machine tools and equipment used in the fabrication of scientific apparatus and research devices, computer-aided design and manufacturing software, various methods and process of part realization, shop safety practices, and current industrial practices
  • Demonstrating skill in operating a wide variety of manual shop equipment
  • Ability to add value to an engineering design team by reviewing specifications, assessing design concepts, determining the completeness of detailed design documents, and validating manufacturing plans
  • Training and mentoring less experienced machine shop users in learning new technologies related to the design and fabrication of prototypes, scheduling work activities, and providing training in shop techniques and procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years of machinist work in research and development
  • Welding, sheet metal, lifting and rigging, and electrical wiring knowledge
  • Maintain up-to-date machining certification training
  • Demonstrated ability in supervising student interns
  • First-hand experience working with students in an academic shop environment
  • Demonstrated skill in fabricating one-of-a-kind prototypes for educational and research purposes
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and SolidCAM or equivalent software
  • Ability to maintain focus in an environment that is interrupted daily

  • Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move items weighing up to 60 pounds.
