Position Summary

The Adjunct - ESL position provides quality instruction andmaintains a positive learning environment in the classroom, with major emphasisplaced on teaching, supporting and evaluating students. The Adjunct roleprovides instruction and monitors teaching/learning effectiveness in coursesassigned by the Department Chair, or other leadership members. The incumbentmust exhibit strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask whileengaging large groups of people with complicated material.

Instruction and Student Learning

Teachesassigned courses as scheduled and assumes primary responsibility for andexercises oversight of the curriculum in conjunction with the Department'spolicies, ensuring both the rigor of programs and the quality of instruction.Considers individual differences of students in order to design and support arange of appropriate learning activities. Participates in the identification ofstudents with academic or other needs and responds by utilizing an appropriateresource.

Usestechnology in a manner appropriate to the nature and objectives of courses andprograms and communicates clearly to students the expectations concerning theuse of such technology. Keeps accurate and appropriate records in accordancewith departmental policies.

Maintainsattendance records, determines and submits grades on time, and in accordance withestablished policies and procedures of the College, and communicates progressfeedback as well as other relevant information to students throughout thesemester. Distributes and maintains accurate syllabi that incorporate departmental, college, cross-college, and instructorrequirements. Conducts classes punctually and in accordance with the prescribedmeeting schedule. Employs appropriate assessment techniques to measurestudents' performance in achieving course goals and objectives. Engages inperiodic meetings with the department, Lead Instructor, and Chairpersonrelative to teaching duties and professional development.

Student Engagement and Advisement

Creates apositive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborativelearning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction,and support for learners. Uses technology to assist incommunication with students. Encourages a sense of community among students forlearning both inside and outside the classroom. Uses skills in cultural competency when working with studentsand guiding inter-student activities.

Advises potentialor current students within the discipline about the program, career, ortransfer options available to assist with degree completion. Refers students toappropriate student and academic support services available at the College orin the community.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Attendrequired trainings anddepartment meetings, as appropriate. *Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.

Usual Physical Requirements

Whileperforming duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digitaldexterity when entering information into computer. The employee regularly sits,stands and walks for extended periods of time. Employee converses verbally withothers in person and by telephone. Employee occasionally reaches with hands orarms, climbs or balances and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. Employeeoccasionally lifts or exerts force of up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions

Typicaloffice and classroom environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical tobusiness offices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: online instruction techniques and methods; Microsoft Office; Blackboard; internet research; online communication and record-keeping. Skill in: providing quality instruction; learning technologies and the use of multimedia technology to enhance student learning; instructional planning and presentation; incorporating critical thinking, effective communication and other general education outcomes in course content; effective time management; proficiency with online communication and record-keeping. Ability to: effectively communicate and use interpersonal skills; create engaging learning environments that respect a wide variety of viewpoints; be sensitive to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities; work independently without ongoing direct supervision; meet deadlines; perform student learning outcomes; maintain confidential and sensitive information, including FERPA.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree and relevant teaching experience. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching online and in a diverse community.

Additional Information:  May involve teaching at both on-campus and off-campus locations, online, seated and hybrid modalities.
