Job Description Summary

The Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CURF) at the University of Pennsylvania houses Penn's campus-wide undergraduate research efforts and fellowships advising in one centralized office serving the entire University.

Reporting to the Executive Director of CURF, the Assistant Director for Outreach and Operations works closely with the CURF Administrative Coordinator and CURF Office Coordinator as the central administrative area in CURF. The Assistant Director supports the Undergraduate Research, Fellowships, and Scholars Programs teams by managing CURF's outreach and communications efforts, including the CURF website, Penn Presents virtual poster session platform, CURF Digest weekly newsletter, SurveyMonkey Apply application management system, and social media presence. The Assistant Director will serve as the point of contact for Schools, Centers, University and external data service providers, and partner offices across campus to promote the transformative academic opportunities housed in CURF. The Assistant Director will act as the liaison between CURF and the Office of University Communications in the preparation of press releases and student stories for University publications. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Administrative Coordinator in providing oversight of CURF's budget and data management

Job Description


Under the supervision of the CURF Executive Director and in collaboration with CURF functional areas:

  • Manage the CURF communication plan that coordinates messaging through website, social media, and University communication portals.

  • Oversee CURF website and Penn Presents web platform including managing relationships with Penn ISC and external vendors, coordinating service and support, supporting staff, and adherence to Penn branding and accessibility standards.

  • Manage CURF email listservs, including the coordination and production of the weekly CURF Digest newsletter. Manage CURF social media presence.

  • Serve as liaison to the Office of University Communications to promote CURF opportunities and prepare CURF press releases. Serve as the point of contact for outreach activities across all CURF subunits with our campus partners.

  • Manage the design and preparation of CURF promotional materials. Oversee AV support for presentations.

  • Provide guidance and support to Administrative Coordinator regarding CURF's application management system, SurveyMonkey Apply.

  • Organize the development and deployment of a coordinated plan to assess the impact of CURF's programming, advising, and outreach efforts. Manage the CURF plan for data reporting and assist the Executive Director in preparation of CURF's annual report.

  • Provide oversight of CURF budgeting and finance in conjunction with Administrative Coordinator and Office Coordinator. Assist Executive Director in the preparation of CURF's annual budget proposal.

  • In collaboration with the Office Coordinator, supervise CURF work study students and provide guidance to CURF Graduate Fellows.

  • Assist Fellowships team with scholarship selection interviews and endorsement letter review process. Assist Undergraduate Research team with planning campus-wide events such as the annual Fall Research Expo.


The minimum of a bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. We are seeking a detail-oriented leader and problem solver with the ability to collaborate with CURF staff, faculty, and partner offices to develop effective solutions to communications and data challenges and with substantive experience working with web applications, databases, and MS Office Applications. The Assistant Director must have outstanding organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and an understanding of budgets and data management. Knowledge of Survey Monkey Apply, Drupal-based content management systems, and Penn's Data Warehouse is highly desired. The ability to work both autonomously and within a team are essential for this position.
