Job Description:

Senior Accountant – As a member of the Corporate Accounting team, this person will report to the Corporate Controller.  The position will be located in Amsted Rail’s downtown Chicago office in a desirable Loop location.  The main responsibilities of this position will be in performing required month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes such as journal entry preparation, account reconciliations, planning and forecasting duties and other required reporting.  This position will also have the opportunity to work on ad-hoc project requests that may come from all levels of leadership.  The office is home to some of the most senior leaders of the company and the position will have direct exposure to individuals in these positions on a daily basis.  Amsted Rail is a Company that encourages promotion from within.  Individuals in this position can advance more quickly with the willingness to try new positions and relocate.  This role is based in our Chicago office and provides a Hybrid work environment.

Experience/Qualifications:


  • One to four years of professional accounting experience. 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. 

  • Pursuit of a CPA is a plus.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of leadership from the Accounting Manager all the way to the CEO-President level of the organization.

  • A sense of urgency to meet deadlines and the ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time.

  • A strong work ethic and the highest level of integrity.

  • A strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP.

  • Able to prepare timely and accurate reports and journal entries with an excellent attention to detail.

  • Takes ownership of assigned responsibilities and tasks.

  • SAP and HANA experience is a plus.

Primary Job Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare journal entries for month, quarter and year-end. 

  • Quickly and accurately load financial data into consolidation software used to report results to Amsted Rail’s parent company (AMSTED Industries Incorporated).

  • Prepare month-end account reconciliations.

  • Prepare HANA reports used for reporting to senior leadership.

  • Assist in preparation of corporate budgets for plan and forecast.

  • Preparation of annual and quarterly deliverables such as Tax Packages and Quarterly Standards.

  • Perform SAP Administrative task such as opening and closing periods and creating new GL accounts and cost centers.

  • Analyze financial trends and performance.

  • Prepare government reports required to be filed by various US departments.

  • Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Corporate Controller, VP-Finance and CFO.
