From early warning, to threat neutralisation, our platforms cover all levels from very short-range systems, to extended protection across the entire battle-space including Airspace Mobility Solutions, Vehicles and Tactical Systems and Missile Defence, Optronics, and Radar.

The system engineer will be part of Thales Air Traffic Control and Digital Aviation Solutions engineering and operations teams located in Arlington, VA and Syracuse, NY areas, which is focused on addressing the needs of the aviation industry’s push to integrate unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace system.  The ideal candidate is tech savvy and organized who regularly works with IT-related equipment, computer systems and data analysis tools.

Our Operations team is responsible for working with customers and UAV operators day-by-day to ensure that our products and services are ready to support flight operations.  The Systems Engineer will work within a team that is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting services and infrastructure that enable the safe and efficient integration of drones into our airspace and our communities.  Workflows and procedures will be developed, followed, and enhanced.  Data analysis tools and methods will also be developed.

The Systems Engineer will lead support staff with certification activities, capturing data, and the triaging of issues.  The System Engineer will be responsible for leading system administration duties including troubleshooting, analyzing data, and coordinating with other support elements.

Essential Functions / Key Areas of Responsibility


  • Provide expert technical support for products, services, and infrastructure 

  • Develop and execute Standard Operating Procedures for the administration and troubleshooting of products, services, and infrastructure

  • Monitor the status of services and components 

  • Lead the triage and debug of system and issues

  • Capture, archive, analyze report on technical and operational data 

  • Develop metrics to assess the operations, safety, and security of products and services 

  • Work to integrate new components and UAVs 

  • Diagnose and resolve issues with the network, and to brief appropriate stakeholders on any necessary resolutions to network issues

  • Support network and security administration of the Vantis Network 

  • Generate and manage incidents, problems and support requests

  • Coordinate with other support elements

Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering or another related technical field with a minimum of  5-8+ years of relevant work experience, or a Master’s degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering or another related technical field with 4+ years of relevant work experience in Software and/or Electrical development design

  • Applicable IT certifications, cybersecurity certifications, or military experience is also acceptable

  • Five or more years of relevant work experience in a system engineering, network management, IT, or cybersecurity related field

  • Good understanding of network and computer troubleshooting techniques

  • Good understanding of computer systems, including basic Windows and Linux administration

  • Working knowledge of data analysis methods and tools including either Matlab or Python

  • Experience supporting complex projects/programs with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Good organizational and time management skills

  • Sense of quality and attention to detail

  • Disciplined and systematic thinker

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in a service-oriented setting in the aerospace, aviation, defense, transportation, drone, or IT sectors

  • Experience with integration and deployment of complex ground based radar systems

  • Experience with configuring and administering IT-related equipment routers, switches, gateways, bridges, access points, modems, hubs, and repeaters

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS or Azure

  • Experience with Information Technology / Service Management frameworks and processes, i.e. ITIL

  • Certifications in IT, cybersecurity, or cloud computing preferred, but not required

  • Experience with Agile methodologies
