Job Summary


This is an emergency essential position. The work schedule is a rotating 8-hour shift during the heating season.

These positions operate steam generating boilers & maintain proper steam pressure and water levels in a generating plant. Work includes keeping appropriate records, making adjustments and repairs to boilers and equipment; monitoring boiler plant systems and reporting potential problems.The Utility Plant Operator 1 performs a variety of semi-skilled manual duties associated with operation of boilers and related equipment.The Utility Plant Operator 2 performs a variety of skilled maintenance and repair work while serving as a lead worker for the semi-skilled utility plant staff. The Utility Plant Operator 2 will also assist with the maintenance of the utility's infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications


    Knowledge of the operation of boiler plant systems and related equipment.Knowledge of boiler plant safety procedures.Strong written and oral communication skillsAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationshipsHigh School Diploma / GED

    UP01 Specific:
    One year as a Utility Plant Operator OR one year of experience in cleaning and assisting in the operation, maintenance, and repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional boiler plant systems and related equipment OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

    UPO2 Specific
    : Two years of experience as a Utility Plant Operator 1 OR two years of experience performing semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance and repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional boiler plant systems and related equipment OR an equivalent combination of experience and training
Preferred Qualifications

Completion of a terminal degree/certificate program from a recognized educational institution in mechanical technology which included the actual operation of boiler, gas or reciprocating engines.2+ years of experience working with steam distribution systems.2+ years of experience working with water distribution systems including water testing and treatment.2+ years of experience with identifying, troubleshooting/diagnosing, and repairing boiler and plant systemsVALUE ADDED:Welding certificationExperience working with a work order management systemContinuing education in boiler plant operation within the past 3 yearsSupplemental Information

The starting salary for the UPO2 position (40 hours) is $39,621 per the AFSCME CBA and the UPO1 position (40hrs) is $35,177 per the AFSCME CBA.
