Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities related to the construction, maintenance, repair or upkeep of buildings, grounds or other state property, requiring no license. This may include assisting in the construction or renovation of buildings, general maintenance and upkeep of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical and other systems, minor repairs to machinery or other equipment, and general maintenance of grounds or lawns.

The Oklahoma Historical Society is seeking a full-time maintenance position to assist with operations at Honey Springs Battlefield, a 1,000+ acre battle site located in Rentiesville near Checotah, OK. The battlefield includes trails and a modern visitor center.

Duties Include:


  • Perform general maintenance on grounds which may include but not limited to mowing, weed-eating, and trimming, tree cutting and removal, and spraying of vegetation.

  • Perform daily maintenance and cleaning of battlefield trails.

  • Regularly inspect Visitor Center for needed repairs and perform repairs deemed necessary for the upkeep and public safety.

  •  Perform routine maintenance on tractors, vehicles, and equipment. Maintain and submit a monthly log of repairs performed on equipment to include the date, hours, and task performed.

  • Communicate needs for site maintenance and repairs to supervisor.

  • Maintain tools and supplies in well-organized workspaces.

  • Keep maintenance areas including shop and all related facilities neat and organized to provide a safe work environment.

  • Maintain facility systems according to the manufacturer's specifications and time schedules. Make minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling, and other systems, as appropriate (tasks not requiring a license).

  • Stay current on and observe safety policies.

  • Assist with special events and programs, including setup, implementation, and clean-up as needed.

The regular schedule is Monday-Friday with occasional weekend work for programming. Work hours are 7 am to 4 pm during the summer and 8 am to 5 pm during the winter.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, fixtures, tools and equipment used in various building and maintenance trades; of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; and supervisory principles and practices. Skill is required to use various tools and equipment, and to construct, maintain or repair various types of structures or equipment. Ability is required to follow written and oral instructions; to write and maintain records and reports; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
