Director, Engineering - Customer Engagement Services - Hybrid at Best Buy in Richfield, Minnesota

This role is hybrid, which means you must be located within a drivable distance to one of our Best Buy corporate offices in Richfield, MN, Atlanta, GA, Boston, GA, or Seattle, WA. You might be asked to come into the office up to 3 days per week.

Best Buy is seeking a Director of Engineering where you will play a key role in shaping the Customer engagement services and related capabilities. This role requires stellar technical, business, and communication skills to be able to collaborate with product, business and technology leaders to co-create and understand key enterprise outcomes in addition to being able to build and implement web scale API capabilities and experiences to the enterprise

Your key areas of responsibility are:


  • Develop measurable and actionable objectives for the customer engagement engineering team to accelerate migration and consolidation of current capabilities to a modern cloud native platform

  • Innovate towards building highly scalable real-time APIs and experiences

  • Partner with product leaders and bring new capabilities to life and help improve our relationship with customers

  • Build capabilities with a privacy and security first mindset

  • Build an engineering organization that is multi-cloud oriented, business focused while being proactive at observing, detecting, and remediating issues in the customer space

  • Ensure resiliency of and interoperability with legacy platforms while building the bridge to a modern cloud native platform iteratively

  • Hire, attract and retain top talent, creating a cohesive culture that fosters innovation, transparent and collaboration

  • Set performance and development plans for team leaders. Provide regular feedback and coaching to enhance potential. Recognize team successes and challenges

  • Evaluate emerging trends and patterns of use, and contribute to building an evolutionary architecture that supports constant change

Minimum Qualifications


  • 8 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree OR equivalent relevant professional experience

  • 2 years experience managing and leading engineering teams;

  • 1 year managing managers

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and/or experience

  • 3 years of experience with cloud ready, highly scalable and performant APIs and event driven systems of integration

Your experience will complement us if it includes or demonstrates:


  • 12 years of relevant professional experience

  • Building and optimizing web scale applications and platforms in a cloud environment and a deep understand of design patterns

  • Implementing DevSecOps and CI/CD practices at scale

  • Experience with NoSQL databases like Cassandra or similar

  • Assessing skills needed on the team, and work to fill those roles by hiring and training an inclusive, diverse team

  • Deeply understanding the value of, and the ability to, enable collaboration between engineers, product managers and leaders

  • Excellent communication skills, especially when working with a distributed team

  • Mentoring and delegating work to encourage growth of those around you. Reviewing patterns, code and provide thoughtful, constructive feedback

  • Contribute to architecture by asking the right questions to ensure architecture matches business needs for the area

  • Ability to triage and manage complex, production issues

  • Bringing a passion to stay on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new patterns, participating in internal & external technology forums, and mentoring members of the engineering community especially those working on or introducing event driven and streaming patterns
