After on-site training this position has the potential to work a hybrid schedule (a combination of days working from home and days in the office).

Job Summary:

The Research Scientist position will be instrumental in helping Teledyne FLIR expand the company's expertise in augmented reality technology and help develop solutions for our customers. As a part of the Digital Threat Detection team, you will help develop solutions to bring greater visibility and tactical awareness to a variety of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and high yield Explosive (CBRNE) threats to those using our solutions.

Job Duties:


  • Lead and execute scientific and technology development activities across several disciplines such as Augmented Reality, CBRNE detection, AI/ML, and integration of systems.

  • Serve as Principal Investigator for a S&T Government Contract.

  • Lead the execution of a loosely defined plan and adapt to changing requirements and customer needs.

  • Guide the customer through technical decisions and inform them of trade-offs between design decisions.

  • Prepare detailed research and development plans and goals, set long-term and short-term priorities for technical work to execute the plan, and attend numerous customer meetings.

  • Lead bi-weekly meetings with subcontractors and customers to both direct and inform the technical work.

  • Interface regularly with program and project management to align technical vision with financial scope and project milestones.

  • Support adherence to monthly customer deliverables such as technical reports, yearly reviews, scheduled work, risk management, and other contracted data requirements.

  • Envisions new applications for augmented reality technology within the defense sector.

  • Expand Teledyne FLIR's business through new proposal writing.

Job Qualifications:


  • Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, legal permanent resident, asylee, refugee or must be eligible to apply for and obtain the appropriate export control license from the U.S. Departments of State or Commerce.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related areas or 5-8 years of relevant experience required.

  • Masters or PhD a plus.

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following is a plus: Python, C#, ROS, GeoJSON, JVM, Jetpack, Linux development.

  • Experience with Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, 3D Mapping, or other Geospatial related work a plus.

  • Experience with the Microsoft HoloLens and/or IVAS Program a plus

  • Familiarity with the DTRA mission and CBRNE programs experience is a plus

  • Experience with Atlassian suite of tools: JIRA, Bitbucket, etc. or other software management tools preferred

  • Strong mathematics background preferred

  • Proficiency with programming strongly preferred

  • Experience managing numerous research teams a plus

  • Able to independently lead and execute research

  • Able to communicate and set expectations with customers in the Government

  • Able to communicate complicated technical issues across a wide range of audiences

  • Able and willing to travel 10-25% domestically.
