General Scope of Responsibilities:



This position serves three main areas broken down as follows: field applications and engineering support, quotation and problem solving of assigned product line, and field based technical marketing.


Primary Product Line: Andritz KPR Wet End Product Lines: Headboxes & Twin Wire Forming
Secondary Product Line: Andritz KPR Dry End Product Lines: Press & Dryer applications support


A Global Applications Engineer with the Andritz Paper and Board Capital Equipment (KPR) group serves as technical support to the Field Sales Department and/or Agents worldwide. They will be the key person in development of technical solutions for a given project and corresponding technical marketing case generation and methodology. They assist inside sales with quote preparation and typically will justify and present for large or strategically important sales presentations globally and will be relied upon to formulate good technical marketing justification for proposed projects, differentiating KPR versus competitors. Sometimes this technical justification will need to be researched or generated prior to formulation as a presentation. Market evaluation and feedback is also critically important.


The Sr. Global Applications Engineer to be located in Springfield, MA, USA. After initial onboarding and training process, remote home office work will be considered. Regardless of location they may be called upon to provide these services globally. Additionally the technical marketing and market development responsibilities are for global projects, and will be used uniformly throughout the company. Travel for this position is estimated at 30%-50%.



Specific Responsibilities:




Field Applications and Engineering Support (50%)



Applications field personnel are often required to audit the existing Headbox and Forming sections of a customer paper machine. Gathering and performing detailed analysis of mill process Q/A data, documenting and evaluating existing equipment, as well as analyzing end-product paper properties are routinely performed.


Field applications personnel may be required to start-up and optimize KPR equipment, as well as support full machine start-up teams when necessary. If performance guarantees are involved with a project, must be able to demonstrate pre and post rebuild improvements with sound data analysis. Start-up supervision, customer training, formulating and executing trial plans and reports are commonly required. Generation of short technical marketing case study material is required after every start-up. Writing and presenting technical papers highlighting nonproprietary theory of design and start-up of KPR equipment is encouraged.


Once an order is received, the product line applications engineer shall provide general applications sizing to the customer and design engineering department prior to detail engineering and manufacturing. Full machine production calculations and simulations of each grade recipe must be performed to ensure the equipment is properly sized for the entire range of operation. Many capital orders bundle paper machine equipment with additional equipment from stock prep, stock approach (thin stock refining, screening, and pumping) and fabrics divisions. Applications engineer must be able to clearly demonstrate process capabilities and demands of paper machine so other divisions may size their equipment accordingly.



Quotation Preparation (30%)



Requests for technical quotations and problem solving can originate from Sales Representatives, Paper Mills, Engineering Firms, or Paper Machinery Builders. A Sr. Global Applications Engineer will review the request, verify the correct information is present within the request, and determine what equipment may be required in order to satisfy the objectives outlined within the request. An outline is generated and forwarded to Inside Sales for pricing.


As part of a proposal, generation of the following material may be required for the primary product line: Air and water supply requirements, drainage projections, layout sketches, horsepower consumption projections, general performance expectations.



Field Based Technical Marketing (20%)



Field based technical marketing will be required to for the presentation of KPR equipment for larger jobs, key customer or strategic accounts, or low market share product lines or regions. The goal of the technical marketing is to provide a clear perception of KPR knowledge base to ensure they view the KPR products as value-added and differentiated, and to ensure the customer views KPR products and people as technically superior.


Some laboratory or literature research may be necessary to further the technical marketing approach or justify the concepts and may even require short duration laboratory or in-mill trials to generate necessary data to formulate and convey a consistent rationale and differentiating criteria for KPR, applications, and support. More extensive development work to support KPR approaches can be referred to the engineering development group or performed by the global applications specialist as interested. Generating value based technical marketing strategies is essential. Writing and presenting technical papers supporting the KPR strategic approach at technical conferences is encouraged.

Supervision Received:



The employee carries out the work within broad guidelines such as objectives, definitions and budget. His/her recommendations are reviewed for soundness of judgment, but are normally accepted as sound. Works with moderate supervision.



Position Requirements:



Requirements:


 B.S in Chemical Engineering, Paper Science/Paper Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
 3-5 years relevant experience in the Pulp and Paper industry, paper machine operations preferred.
 Excellent communication skills.
 Ability to research or generate supportive data as needed for technical marketing approach
 Ability to generate and present technical arguments and rationale in presentation format.
 Experience with paper machine operations and process knowledge
 Familiar with paper physical property test methods
 Mechanical aptitude
 Ability to develop close business relationships from machine floor to management personnel
 Experience with Mini-Tab, PI Process Book / Capstone, Advanced Excel Spreadsheets, and Solidworks/Inventor simulation tools preferred, but not required
 Self-starter. This position will require the associate to recognize and generate projects in the technical marketing and market development areas based upon customer and market interaction.



Effort & Working Conditions: Working conditions can include production/fabrication facilities, paper mills, offices and vendor sites.


Normal work environment involves freedom to move about. The physical environment is clean and climate-controlled within an office workstation. May be required to visit the manufacturing floor where noise, dust, heat are present. Sensory attention is required to read reports, answer telephones, sit for long periods of time, attend meetings, etc. High demands in terms of deadlines.
