Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the painting, finishing and decorating of items such as wood, metal and concrete surfaces of buildings and other structures, equipment, machinery and furnishings at state facilities. This includes preparing paints and surfaces to be painted, applying under coats and finish coats of paint and clearing and storing equipment.

Typical Functions


  • Prepares new and old surfaces for finishing by using sandpaper, burners, scrapers, brushes, sanding machines, dusters, washing compounds and finish removers; putties, plasters or otherwise fills and repairs cracks and holes; erects and removes ladders, scaffolding, swinging stages and boatswain chairs; replaces broken glass in sashes and doors; removes putty or glazing compounds; caulks window frames, door frames and similar units.

  • Prepares paints and allied products; matches colors; applies undercoats and finish coats to furnishings, machinery, equipment and exterior and interior surfaces of buildings and other structures, using brush, roller or spray gun; paints simple signs; performs needed paper-hanging; checks quality, quantity and condition of materials and equipment received; cleans and maintains brushes and other equipment and places of work; advises in the selection, ordering and storing of painting and finishing materials and equipment; supervises and instructs patients assigned to painting crews.

  • Performs difficult and artistic decorating work, including graining, marbling, stripping, stippling and matching colors, shadings and textures of interior finishes; mixes and prepares special paints by calculating and mixing proper proportions of pigment, vehicle and thinner.

Level Descriptor

This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities at the full performance level for performing a full range of activities in performing painting work on various material and surfaces. This will include responsibility for preparation of paints, surfaces and other materials, matching colors and performing other required tasks. Some responsibility may be assigned for providing training and guidance to painting crews consisting of laborers, inmates, temporary help, or other unskilled to semi-skilled personnel.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirement at this level consist of two years of experience in skilled painting work or an equivalent combination of education/training and experience in the painting trade.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in finishing and painting; and of safety precautions. Skill is required to use paint application tools. Ability is required to mix paints and match colo; to set up and work on ladders, scaffolds and riggings; and to direct unskilled assistants.

Special Requirements

Some positions may require that applicants: Successfully complete a psychological evaluation similar to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (70 O.S. Supp. 1989, Section 3311 D.2.b). Have no record of conviction of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude (70 O.S. Supp. 1989, Section 3311 D.2.a). Successfully take and pass a driving test, vision test, oral interview, background investigation and polygraph examination, all as established and prescribed by the Commissioner of Public Safety. Be willing to attend and successfully complete a course of training as prescribed by the Commissioner of Public Safety and must either be certified as a Police Officer at time of appointment or must be certified as a Police Officer by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) as defined by 70 O.S. Supp. 1989, Section 3311 D within one year from the date of initial appointment. Possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of appointment. @@ The maximum age of initial employment of any person employed as a Police Officer (DPS) shall be thirty-five years of age (47 O.S. Supp. 1989, Section 2-105.3(B)). Submit to and successfully pass a controlled substance screening conducted by a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) certified laboratory (47 O.S. Supp. 1990, Section 2-105.5).The Department of Public Safety has determined that some positions in this job family are safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8.
