Overview



The Nurse Extern Program at Tower Health offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for nursing students to apply knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to the real-world practice of nursing. The program seeks to promote nursing at Tower Health and positively impact the recruitment of graduate nurses.


The Extern Program is a paid 8-12 week program that begins as early as May, 2023. The Externs will receive a general overview during Orientation week, and then will meet with their Preceptors on their assigned floors. The Externs may have the opportunity to rotate and shadow in various departments to gain insight to the different specialty areas throughout the Tower Health System.


Externs will be offered the opportunity to participate in 1-hour learning experiences on specific topics during the externship.



Responsibilities

• Externs are employed by Tower Health and will be expected to be at work when assigned. This is not only a student experience; it is a paid position for 8 weeks with the opportunity to continue to work during the school year/breaks.


• Enhance skill acquisition through ongoing training and validation


• The extern will be a vital part of the healthcare team and is expected to perform as a partner with the nurse to give primary nursing care to their assigned patients.


• Arrive to the unit at the scheduled time and work through the entire shift.


• Build on experiences to continue learning and advance skills.


• Complete an exit interview, and complete an ecaluation of their experience and preceptors.

• Must have completed fundamentals of nursing and at least one clinical rotation.


• GPA 3.0


• Reference from a Professor/Instructor

• BLS Certification
