This role has the responsibility to lead a team focused on operational excellence, development processes, and continuous improvement for the Cardiac Implantables Technology Development Center (TDC). This leader will develop a proactive and responsive team to roadmap and execute process maintenance and operational excellence initiatives, team effectiveness and process coaching, and training and onboarding strategies. The position is responsible for the TDC Product Development Process, including Design Controls and business procedures as well as incorporation of Design | Reliability | Manufacturability (DRM) strategy. Their team will manage multiple technology platforms enabling Program Management data, analytics, information sharing, and best practices. The leader will direct and report on additional design quality improvement initiatives as aligned with TDC leadership.

A Day in the Life:

Stakeholder Management:


  • Lead an organization (15-20 members) to achieve objectives, developing their capabilities and industry/organizational awareness to adapt to changing conditions
  • Enhance the product development lifecycle within R&D by applying industry best practices, processes, and metrics
  • Influence cross-functional partners (e.g. OU R&D leaders, functional leaders) on their R&D priorities and strategies to improve overall R&D quality, predictability, and efficiency
  • Represent the Cardiac Implantables TDC / Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) on the DRM Council
  • Develop relationships and coordinate strategies with the Enterprise Design Center of Excellence, Enterprise Quality, and other key drivers and stakeholders related to Product Development Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with PMO leadership on change management and deployment across a wide scope of functions and programs

Operational leadership:


  • Oversee and manage the operational aspects of the PMO, including resource and portfolio planning tools, PRC & Programs website, and Product Development Metrics and Analytics
  • Accountable for training and maintenance related to AOP & Financial Forecasting tools, timelines, and support
  • Provide system administration and technical support, via team, for applications essential to PMO operation and communication, utilizing platforms such as ResourceFirst, Sharepoint, PowerBI, and Wikipedia. Ensure appropriate technology advancements and improvements to meet efficiency and effectiveness goals.

Process leadership:


  • Accountable for Design Controls process compliance with applicable regulations, including maintenance, support, coaching, and defense of Design Controls process during internal and external audits, via team
  • Accountable for the maintenance, improvement, and scalable application of TDC R&D design controls and business processes, incorporating the voice stakeholders from OU leadership to individual contributors
  • Accountable for the Cardiac Implantables DRM strategy, including DRM Green Belt and Leadership training execution, in partnership with functional DRM stakeholders

Continuous Improvement leadership:


  • Serve as a single point of contact for TDC design quality improvement initiatives and quality metrics related to development processes and cross-functional best practices
  • Deliver quarterly updates for Quality Management Reviews (QMRs) on TDC design quality performance, actions, & recommendations. Provide annual TDC design quality initiative recommendations.
  • Develop and socialize an ongoing, prioritized roadmap of improvement ideas and efforts based on broad stakeholder inputs, gathering feedback from multiple functional sources

Talent Development:


  • Solicit feedback on the performance of products and teams, including quality, compliance, and business areas, to identify themes to be addressed via training and education, revising strategy and content to address current and future needs
  • Develop training and educational programming related to the Product Development Process and team effectiveness
  • Develop tools and processes to develop and promote core team leader and core team member pipelines of talent

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with a bachelor's degree (or 8 years with an advanced degree) in a product development environment with 7+ years of managerial experience

Nice to Have:


  • Past engineering experience in medical device product development
  • Engineering degree in Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or SW engineering, or MBA
  • Proven program management experience leading cross-functional teams in a matrix environment
  • Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification in DRM, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience working in a Research and Development organization as a change agent, orchestrating and implementing DRM / DFSS or other process improvements, resulting in sustained change
  • Experience and ability to train, lead, mentor, coach and inspire individuals and teams to significantly impact the business
  • Understanding of current Medtronic Cardiac Implantables systems, and familiarity with the CRM product development process
  • Familiarity with FDA and ISO standards
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to work with others collaboratively and accomplish goals working within a team
  • Experience as a creative problem solver
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Comfort in dealing with ambiguity
  • Ability to influence at all levels of the organization
  • Confidence in applying engineering experience to make pragmatic choices about system design, architecture, and implementation

The provided base salary range is used nationally in the United States (except in Puerto Rico and certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
