Description:

It is the Audacious Goal of the Tulane Department of Neurology to be the world's most progressive department with respect to the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders for all members of society using dietary, nutritional, and gut microbiome targeted approaches ("nutritional neurology"). This will include in the areas of Healthy Brain Aging (primary and secondary prevention of cognitive decline and dementia), post COVID recovery, stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and potentially other areas of neurology.
 Accordingly, the Department of Neurology at Tulane University School of Medicine seeks to hire an instructor to join our faculty.  The position will support the Department's tripartite mission, "to teach, to innovate, to care". It is estimated that the position will dedicate 60%-80% effort to clinical practice and 20%-40% effort to teaching and research, though the FTE distributions may vary slightly over time as needed. Responsibility will include: ·      Didactic lectures relating to diet and nutrition to Tulane medical students and neurology residents and faculty.·      Serving on the Tulane Neurology Wellness Committee.·      Community outreach regarding healthy brain habits, with a focus on diet and nutrition·      Study coordination of industry-sponsored and investigator initiated clinical trials relating to nutritional neurology·      Presentations at scientific meetings and publications in peer reviewed journals·      The provision of billable, evidence-based nutrition and dietary consults to outpatients with a range of neurological disorders, including those seen within the Healthy Brain Aging Initiative at University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO), and those seen within the neurology subspecialty practices at East Jefferson General Hospital. East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH) is a not-for-profit community hospital that was formed in 1965, opened its doors in 1971 and in 2020 joined LCMC Health, an 8-hospital system serving the healthcare needs of the Gulf Coast region. Now the clinical home for Tulane University School of Medicine, EJGH has entered a new era as an expanded hub for specialty care, advanced treatment, and academic medicine. The 420-bed hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is Louisiana's first Nurse Magnet hospital. It is the primary outpatient practice site for Tulane Neurosciences. EJGH will also be the home for Tulane's Nutritional Epilepsy Center, one of the only a few such programs in the United States, and to be the first in Gulf South region. UMCNO is a 446-bed, non-profit, public, research and academic hospital located in New Orleans, Louisiana, providing tertiary and level I trauma care for the region. The hospital is operated by LCMC Health and is the largest hospital in the system. UMCNO is affiliated with Tulane University School of Medicine and LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, as well as several other healthcare degree-conferring institutions in the region. The inpatient neuroscience services at UMCNO currently include a catheter-ready stroke service (Tulane operated), a neurocritical care service (LSU and Tulane jointly operated), and two general neurology consulting services (Tulane and LSU separately operated). UMCNO is also the home of the Healthy Brain Aging Initiative (HBAI), a banner enterprise of the Tulane Department of Neurology. This initiative includes a dedicated team of neurologists, neuropsychologists/psychometrists, advanced practice providers, social workers, and neuroscientists, aiming to promote healthy brain aging through its Center for Alzheimer's Prevention, its Center for Memory Disorders, and its Center for Parkinson's Disease. Through their partnership with LCMC Health, Tulane and LSU Neurology faculty are collaborating to build the region's only multi-institutional healthy brain aging initiative, and the largest and most comprehensive program in the Gulf South region. The position will also be a member of the growing HBAI team. Tulane University School of Medicine also hosts unique programs relevant to diet and nutrition including the Nutritional Neuroscience Laboratory (directed by the Neurology Chair), and opportunities to collaborate with faculty in the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine, the Brain Institute, the National Primate Research Center; as well as with faculty in the Cecilia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.  


Qualifications:

Master's degree or higher in nutrition or related fieldQualified to be a Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist by the Louisiana Board of Dietetics and NutritionVerification of Licensure from any state in which you hold or have ever held licensureBachelors Degree or higher (this job requires Master's degree or higher) from a college or university accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges or any other regional accreditation agency with a major course of study in human nutrition, food ad nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management Completed ACEND accredited supervised practice program Passed Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) exam
