Another Source’s client, Lewis & Clark College, is recruiting a Campus Safety Director to join their team in Portland, OR. 

As the Campus Safety Director of Campus Safety, you will be responsible for promoting and maintaining the safety and security of the College and assisting all offices that support the residential campus. You will manage the Campus Safety Staff, assuring the safety and security of the College 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. Duties include hiring, shift staffing, review of incident reports, training, maintaining the safety and security of the buildings and property of Lewis & Clark College, implementation of Clery Act requirements, budgeting, consulting/coordinating with other college departments on a daily basis, and especially in creating a positive, safe community that allows the LC community to thrive.

How You will Spend Your Time: 

Staff & Operations Management (45%) 

  • Responsible for the selection, supervision, and performance management of the department employees. 

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for department with a focus on the College's culture, mission, and vision. 

  • Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among employees. 

  • Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them. 

  • Build and work with diverse teams effectively. 

  • Review Campus Safety officers’ investigations of policy and law violations. Coordinate those investigations with primary contacts both inside and outside the College. 

  • Develop and manage the budget for the Campus Safety department. 

  • Supervise and review staff performance; provide annual evaluations to officers and dispatchers; counsel and train employees as appropriate. 

  • Provide and/or secure training in all areas for Campus Safety staff, including HIPAA, FERPA, first aid, investigations, report writing, emergency response, trauma-informed investigation and reporting, Title IX, working effectively with cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity, searching, self- defense, use of force and other relevant techniques. 

  • Oversee implementation of Clery Act requirements, including annual reporting and maintenance of Clery and VAWA (Title IX) crime statistics, timely warnings, emergency notifications, and the Daily Crime Log (DCL), as well as regularly review and participate in the College’s reporting and database systems; educate other campus security authorities as to their responsibilities. 

Campus Leadership Responsibilities & Community Building (40%)  

  • Consult with core members of the Welfare Intervention Network (WIN) and participate in WIN meetings as necessary. 

  • Serve as a member of the Incident Management Steering Committee that is responsible for the College’s emergency procedures planning, formulating, and implementing the College’s response to natural disasters, weather-related emergencies, violence, lockdowns, evacuations, and other emergencies. 

  • Represent Campus Safety on various campus committees including Student Life Leadership Team, Parking and Transportation Committee, WIN, and Campus Operations, as well as other committees as needed. 

  • Set a positive tone and direction of support and safety and assist in maintaining a healthy LC community. 

Student Life Divisional Responsibilities (15%) 

  • Provide the vision and direction for the Department of Campus Safety in support of the mission and goals of the Division of Student Life and the strategic plan of the College. 

  • Serve on the Division of Student Life Leadership Team and support the overall goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (criminal justice, police science, public administration, or similar discipline preferred) or comparable professional experience. 

  • 5 years of progressively responsible leadership experience within security, public safety, or law enforcement organization. 

  • Collaborative and collegial style of leadership with the ability and willingness to work as a member of a team, and to foster a team environment. 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, issues, trends and best practices in campus safety and security. 

  • Emergency management experience and ability to consistently use sound judgement and take charge in dealing professionally and calmly in an emergency. 

  • Proficiency with technology, especially data management systems, emergency notification. 

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication and listening skills. 

  • Ability to work proficiently and engender trust with constituents from diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds. 

  • Ability to meet a flexible schedule including evening and weekends. 

  • Must be available for on-call emergencies in person, and by phone. Must carry a mobile phone. 

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record and DMV check. 

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification. 

  • Department of Public Safety Standards and Trainings (DPSST) certification as an Executive Manager. 

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s degree in a relevant educational field. 

  • Experience working on a liberal arts campus or University in security/public safety. 

  • Supervisory experience in a union environment. 

  • Experience with the Incident Command System (ICS) as established through the National Ability to develop and implement departmental vision, strategy, and goals with and for students, staff, and key stakeholders. 

  • Trained as a trainer for specific issues of safety and security. 

  • Skill in developing strong community relations and building bridges between the campus community and surrounding community.
