Things to avoid in your Cover Letter

OK! You found a position that you are really excited about. You have fine tuned your resume. Now you need to write a cover letter. You are kind of confused because your not sure what to write about. Mostly, what not to do. You want it to be perfect. Follow the things to avoid below and I believe it will help you. 1) Do not use a Cover Letter template: This is a big mistake for job seekers. Their confusion sends them on a Google search for a basic fill in the blank cover letter. Trust me, that is too generic. Each cover letter needs to be specific for the job title and the company. It needs to be personal, stating your accomplishments and what you hope to accomplish in this new position at the new company. 2) Do not Undersell yourself: The cover letter is where you bring it home, where you make the Hiring Manager want to bring you in for an interview. Of course do not lie about anything but for sure be boastful, descriptive and skill driven in your writing. An example! Let's say that you are applying for a job in Marketing and one of the qualifications was Social Media Marketing. DO NOT simply put Social Media Marketing in your cover letter. Be descriptive and detailed. For example, In your previous job you handled the Social Media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Linked, Google+. You get my drift. Put in there a brief strategy of your timing in postings and what you posted and the target demographic you were going after. 3) Do not make the Cover Letter only about your accomplishments: Now I know I am confusing you right? What I mean by this is that in the cover letter, you need to find a way to express to the Hiring Manager your passion for the work that you do, your dedication to your craft and your desire to work at his/her company. Why would you be a good fit? How would the company benefit from hiring you over someone else? Why your are excited to work for that particular company. 4) Do not leave out your contact information. 5) Do not forget to edit your Cover Letter. I hope this helps you to write your Cover Letter.
