Job Description:




Principal Duties and Responsibilities 1. Refills Pyxis Medstations with unit dosages from medication profiles and delivers meds to patient units or Pyxis Medstations. 2. Ensures all medications, admixtures, or other dispensed products from the pharmacy are properly labeled and checked before delivery 3. Performs inventory maintenance upon refill and as required (e.g. inventory checks, expiration date checks, Pyxis quality assurance, routine Talyst counts, etc.) 4. Performs routinely scheduled rounds to nursing units to deliver and pick up medications in a timely and accurate manner. 5. Compounds bulk stock solutions and other non-sterile mixtures. 6. Ensures the proper handling of hazardous medications and products following proper policies and procedures. 7. Pre-packages bulk medications and bulk liquids into unit-dose packaging for dispensing to patients or refilling Pyxis Medstations. 8. Performs calculations for dosage volumes, unit conversions, admixture volumes, and other required calculations for the preparation and validation of all sterile and non-sterile compounding. 9. Prepares the clean room and sterile products areas for daily use. 10. Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile compounds timely and accurately while following clean room policies and procedures 11. Prepares intravenous hazardous medication admixtures while following clean room policies and procedures. 12. Complies with Universal Precautions and Aseptic Technique and Handling of Hazardous Chemicals guidelines; wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required 13. Ensures adequate stock of sterile equipment, pharmaceutical equipment, and pharmaceuticals in the pharmacy, medication areas, and automated pharmacy systems. 14. Properly disposes of medications, hazardous substances, sharps, papers with protected health information, and other items within the pharmacy. 15. Assists the pharmacist with the handling of telephone calls and subsequently triages calls appropriately. 16. Maintains effective communications with department directors, managers, pharmacists, and department personnel. 17. Identifies process improvements and communicates these in staff meetings or to supervisors as needed. 18. Participates in the monthly reviews of all medication care areas and reports back any violations. 19. Documents all quality assurance and quality improvement information in the department s database as needed (e.g. Simplifi). 20. Ensures general cleanliness and appearance of the pharmacy areas. 21. Assists in the training and orientation of new technicians to departmental standards, policies, and procedures. 22. Ensures quality standards for the department. 23. Abides by all hospital and departmental policies. 24. Performs any other duties and responsibilities as needed by the pharmacy department.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 1. High school education with ability to read pharmaceutical orders, etc. 2. Current pharmacy technician or intern license from the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy. Technicians must also hold national certification (CPhT). 3. Comprehends and applies an understanding of drug and dosage forms. Knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terminology desired. 4. Able to operate a computer and automated dispensing systems 5. Works accurately, concentrates, and pays attention to detail, even under stress or time constraints 6. Satisfactory completion of a training program to acquire the necessary technical skills to prepare intravenous admixtures 7. Not convicted of a drug-related felony or admitted to sufficient facts to warrant such findings 8. Ability to solve day-to-day problems in conjunction with the pharmacists 9. Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with nurses, patients, and other staff members WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Normal hospital environment with rotating shifts 2. Works under constant time deadlines 3. Minimal exposure to caustic agents, acids, and fumes 4. Standing or walking 70% of the time 5. Performs data entry with repetitive hand movements and visual concentration at a video display terminal in order to review and enter data 6. Required to lift, pull, or push 25 pounds, and up to an occasional weight of 50 pounds 7. Mount Auburn Hospital employees must be able to readily adjust to change and handle a rapid paced environment and the stresses associated with that, while continuing to provide high-quality, efficient service.
