Under the direction of the Principal Investigator Dr. Shemin, perform tissue engineering (TE) for creation of new functional tissue in order to replace lost or failing tissue. For clinically relevant applications of TE, identify a suitable cell source. Utilize stem cells to repair damaged organs like the heart from their component parts. Develop stem cell-based strategies for cardiac repair. Engineer a hiPS cell-based cardiac patch by determining 1) the effects of niche ECM proteins on cardiac progenitor cell (CPC) proliferation and differentiation in a 2-D culture model, 2) the effects of an electrospun 3-D environment on survival and self-renewal of CPCs, and 3) the importance of electrical pacing and mechanical stimulation in controlling CPC self-renewal and fate in a 3-D culture system.
Working knowledge and experience of molecular biology and immunology
Experience in tissue culture and use of stem cells
Organization and meticulous record keeping
Ability to work with minimal supervision
