3M is seeking an Advanced Application Engineer for the Ceramics and Additives business in the Advanced Materials Division (AdMD), located in Maplewood, MN.  At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter.  Here, you go.

Job Summary:

The person hired for this position will primarily be responsible for providing technical solutions and key account support for 3M™ Advanced Ceramics products including Nextel™ Ceramic Fibers and Boron Nitride Cooling Fillers


This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.

 Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Finding solutions to customer problems while working within the framework of a cross-functional team that includes Sales, Marketing, Quality, and Manufacturing

  • Hands on laboratory work such as mechanical property testing and analytical testing

  • Developing and delivering data packages to enable customers and 3M sales personnel to better demonstrate benefits of 3M’s Advanced Ceramic products

  • Validating product performance at customer sites (field tests).

  • Investigating customer issues and advise on causation and recommended solutions.

  • Support of new product development and new application development

  • Frequent verbal and written communication including phone calls, team meetings and presentations both with customers and internally within 3M. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of two (2) years combined application engineering, project engineering, process engineering, manufacturing engineering, manufacturing technology, product development, quality, and/or research laboratory experience in a private, public, government or military environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a related discipline (Ceramics, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, etc.) from an accredited institution

  • Experience in technical support activities with customers

  • Laboratory or manufacturing experience including material testing and analytical skills

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills both written and oral

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a cross-functional team

  • Ability to gather customer insights through listening, observing and asking questions

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Track record of creative problem solving/troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and accommodate changing circumstances

Location:  Maplewood, MN

Travel:  May include up to 30% domestic/international
