Job Description:

Position Summary: This is the second level of the Engineering classification. Provide engineering/technical expertise to solve more complex problems in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence.

Essential Functions:

Under some direct supervision, in the area of expertise will provide:

 

• Engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems

• Effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities

• Thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches

• Continuous improvement of job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance

• Effective oral and written communication skills

• Accurate records and files

 • Support of the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

 


Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate for this position will be working on the relay and control design of substations 23 kV and higher.  Some of the responsibilities include:
·         Design the protection and control for substations including:
o    Single line diagrams
o    Three line diagrams
o    Protection and control schematic diagrams
o    Protection and control panel layout drawings
o    Protection and control panel wiring diagrams
o    Substation equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, potential transformers, etc.) wiring diagrams.
o    Point-to-point checks of wiring diagrams to schematic diagrams.
·         Complete the bill of material required for construction of the substation.
·         Ensure that a complete design package (drawings, bill of materials, circuit lists, construction specifications, etc.) is delivered to the customer within budget and on time.
·         Mark-up drawings for others to complete the CAD design as well as do some of their own CAD work.
·         Contribute to the completion of scopes and estimates for various projects (new substations, circuit breaker replacements, relay replacements, etc.)
o    Gather relevant drawings, review, and markup.
o    Take drawings on site visits to compare the drawings to existing conditions.
o    Write a complete scope for the project.
 
As the successful candidate gains experience, more responsibility will be given to the candidate with the goal that the candidate will become a lead project engineer supervising the design.  Other advanced responsibilities include:
·         Develop relay settings.
·         Write protection specifications.

Other Requirements:

*Graduate of a 4yr. University Engineering ABET Accredited program

2 to 4 years experience as a practicing engineer- 

 • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

• Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations

• Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

• Good written and oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

• Received a passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

• Understanding of basic principles of project management
