The Sr Scientist, ASO Chemistry is a newly created position designed to advance PTC’s research interests in antisense oligonucleotides as a therapy for genetic disorders. The Sr Scientist, ASO Chemistry will be tasked with the responsibility of executing protocols for the synthesis of a broad range of antisense oligonucleotides to contribute to PTC’s research and drug discovery activities. The Sr Scientist, ASO Chemistry is also responsible for interpreting and communicating the results of experiments to a cross functional team.
Plans, initiates and executes synthetic protocols for antisense oligonucleotides and antisense oligonucleotide conjugates.
May be assigned to contribute to small molecule medicinal chemistry efforts as needed.
Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories related to antisense oligonucleotides and their applications for treating genetic disorders.
Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories related to synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.
Presents findings internally to cross-functional teams.
Provides scientific advice to research leadership on projects and areas of expertise.
Participates in the development and writing of patent applications and identifies patentable inventions.
Abides by all safety and regulatory guidelines.
* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.
Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry or related field and a minimum of 4 years of medicinal chemistry experience, with at least 2 of those years in the field of antisense oligonucleotide therapeutics.
* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.
Broad knowledge of antisense oligonucleotide therapeutics, including pros and cons of backbones, new approaches to delivery and safety concerns.
Broad knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, including transition metal mediated cross-couplings, mechanisms, and retrosynthetic planning.
Demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as required, in a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members.
Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
