Mars Wrigley Confectionery is looking for a Supply Overheads Manager to work in Hackettstown, NJ.  The Supply Overheads Manager is responsible for the planning, accounting, and reporting of the overheads area for the R&D function and the consolidation of the Commercial, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Logistics U.S. Overheads functions.  This includes:

  • Co-pilot to R&D VP and R&D Leadership team ($65m budget), providing trend analysis & insight, identifying opportunities/risks, and supporting research of budget management issues

  • Developing and running the overheads planning and budgeting process across the supply function

  • Ensuring robust internal controls for the overheads area

  • Analysis, reconciliation, and reporting for certain confidential financial accounts

  • Partnering with both supply and finance teams to ensure alignment in monthly reporting and seek reporting efficiencies

The position requires significant interaction with regional finance and supply senior management. Required competencies include strong organizational, communication, and presentation skills, and a proven ability to build positive working relationships across departments within the business.  Understanding of financial accounting principles, accounting processes and systems, and internal controls are key to the role.  In addition, the ability to initiate change and drive improvement in our accounting policies and business processes and practices will be crucial to success.


Principal Accountabilities

Planning and Budgeting

The key accountability of the role is to develop and manage a robust process for planning, budgeting, and reporting of overhead costs for Commercial, Manufacturing, Engineering, R&D, and Logistics functions.  Overhead costs consist of salary/wages/benefits (SWB) and activity spending across the business, excluding those costs directly connected with production in the factories. The manager will formulate budget review processes with management team and other key stakeholders, with an objective to provide clarity on trends, challenge assumptions, and create budget reduction strategies.  Besides official forecast cycles, the manager must assess the ongoing risk that this area presents and communicate this information to the business in a timely manner.

Elements of the planning and budgeting process that are crucial to success include:

  • Methodologies for target setting and translation from top-line commitments to more detailed budgeting.

  • Well-defined timelines and milestones, integrated with the general business and planning calendar.

  • User-friendly communication of base data such as previous actuals, forecasts, assumptions, organizational structures, and headcount.

  • Clear communication of the results of the budget process to key stakeholders (senior management, department heads, budget managers) at appropriate levels of detail.

  • Regular reviews of spending progress against plans, identification of key issues.

  • Development/utilization of key budgeting tools.

Actual Cost Reporting

In addition to the planning and budgeting elements of the role, providing transparency to our actual overhead spending and key drivers is important.  The manager will:

  • Analyze and communicate actual cost and variance results to budget managers, department heads, and senior management. 

  • Manage functional, regional, and global project cost allocation and cross charges.

  • Ensure the integrity of overhead reporting ensuring that budgets and actuals are accurate and available on a timely basis.  This will also include improvement of current tools in SAP.

  • Lead improvements in general ledger reporting for the area.

  • Carry out overall responsibility for period close and year-end accrual process for overheads.

  • Analyze, reconcile, and report on certain confidential financial accounts (legal, re-structuring, relocation, etc.)

  • Support overhead costs in annual external audit.

Internal Control

This position has responsibility for the documentation and monitoring of best practice in internal controls in the overheads accounting areas, ensuring compliance with Mars best practices.  As a regular portion of the role, the manager will undertake a review of our internal controls and accounting best practice in these areas, with an eye toward streamlining our processes, and ensuring they are efficient - fit and use of SAP.



Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or a related field is required (MBA preferred)

CPA/CA or equivalent certification would be preferred

4+ years of work experience in accounting and finance.

Experience managing business processes.

Professional training and experience in managing financial planning and accounting processes and delivering financial reporting.
