Our Analytics and Performance Improvement team is responsible for acquiring data that is internal and external to the company and then using that data to build models, perform analyses, and produce forecasts to determine and drive better ways to serve and meet our customer’s needs.



Job Purpose

The Economics team is the Company’s go-to center for economic/energy information and insight. As Lead Economist, you will provide economic and energy price inputs to National Grid’s detailed electric and gas forecasting models. You will analyze the costs, benefits, and economic impact of National Grid’s emerging technology investment proposals: examples include solar installations, electric vehicle charging, storage, microgrids, grid modernization, and other investments. You will estimate emissions savings, energy costs savings, and economic development benefits in support of National Grid’s major infrastructure investment proposals. You will provide inflation adjustments and analyses for rate case filings. You will support regulatory filings as an expert witness and/or with pre-filed testimony and Information Requests (IR) responses. Finally, you will analyze service area economic conditions and energy markets for National Grid Executives, Investor Relations, the Electric and Gas Jurisdictions, and functional departments throughout the Company.



    Key Accountabilities

    • Key Accountabilities:

    • Develop economic and energy price forecasts for electric and gas load forecasting models
    • Estimate economic and environmental benefits (for example, energy cost savings and emissions reductions) of gas expansion, solar, electric vehicle, grid modernization, and other investments
    • Prepare economic impact analyses of National Grid investments, strategies, and initiatives using the REMI regional economic model
    • Prepare data responses to regulatory requests for information for company rate cases and other proceedings
    • Provide expert testimony for regulators in support of National Grid investments
    • Meet with external regulatory and other policy makers to advocate our approaches and transform their thinking to the best practices and latest technologies in the energy sector
    • Stay current and act as a Company expert in all policies, regulatory requirements, market trends, and industry standards regarding customer energy use and technologies and programs impacting that use (e.g., energy efficiency, demand response, etc.)


    Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required


    Qualifications

    • Masters' Degree required, (preferedPhD or ABD in Economics), with demonstrated expertise in econometrics, quantitative analysis, and economic theory
    • Land use modeling experience/knowledge a plus
    • Solid experience or capability in MS Office suite, SQL, R or Python
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Highly motivated and can work effectively both independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to understand and explain complicated technical concepts to non-technical personnel internal and external to National Grid
    • Ability and desire to interact with multiple levels of management, various departments within the company, as well as external customers including regulators, market operators, and other market participants.
    • Valid driver’s license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy.
