In Research, Development & Quality (RD&Q), your skills can be the special ingredient that brings our brands to life. As part of a fantastic team of scientists, engineers and nutritionists, you’ll work tirelessly on product design or development, process development, quality, nutrition, sensory and food safety aspects to ensure we deliver a consistent, delightful consumer experience. RD&Q is where you’ll turn great ideas into brilliant brands.

This RD&Q position is in East Hanover, NJ and is focused on building the front-end innovation pipeline for the Global Gum & Candy category. This requires strong creative thinking skills and the ability to imagine future possibilities. The candidate will provide consumer centricity and technical leadership within the Front-End Technology & Innovation (FETI) team, applying rapid and iterative experimentation to turn ideas into innovative solutions that drive category growth. The individual will participate in the early stages of consumer-led product development lifecycle from concept to development. The position is also tasked with scouting and completing proof of principle on innovative ingredient technologies. 

The candidate will demonstrate a range of innovation skills, including ability to interpret strategy, consumer and technical insights to ideate, carry out rapid prototyping and execute early stages of product design. The ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, apply technical expertise to solve complex problems and develop and share best practices with the global technical community is required for the role. The candidate will be able to leverage project management skills to develop project objectives and recommend action plans to implement key findings. Personal drive, organization, the ability to manage ambiguity and excellent communication skills will be the keys to success in this role.

A candidate with specific experience working with confections is strongly preferred. Candidates with other confections or food experience will be considered and will be required to demonstrate the intellectual horsepower and learning agility necessary to quickly develop expertise in this field.


  • Bring creative thinking to FETI team to enable the discovery of new connections inspired by observation of consumers and close tracking of trends and technical insights. Probe a number of sources for inspiration, looking beyond the obvious.

  • Apply knowledge of food science principles and ingredient functionality to create and develop prototypes and formulations for front end innovation pipeline.

  • Partner closely with consumer science, process and package teams to ideate and bring to life consumer-led product solutions by means of rapid prototyping through to scale-up feasibility. Use agile methods and the appropriate level of technical rigor to solve problems.

  • Provide technical leadership on cross functional project teams; collaboratively develop technical learning plan and timeline for each project, while understanding our function’s relationship to others in the business.

  • Work closely with Consumer Science and BU partners to develop robust consumer learning plans.

  • Influence business partners to drive project agenda; build effective relationships with colleagues, cross functional teams and stakeholders.

  • Leverage sources beyond own area of recognized expertise within organization to ensure effectiveness.

  • B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a Product Development or technical RDQ role

  • Willing to travel up to 20% both domestically and internationally

  • Experience working with confectionery formulas & ingredients (desired, will train)

  • Creative mindset and ability to see problems through a consumer lens

  • Strong communication skills; ability to influence decision makers, build relationships and drive to results

  • Strong project planning & management skills

  • Ability to synthesize data from a variety of sources to solve complex problems
