JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE
The Metallographer performs sample preparation, testing, and manages data in support of Materion's requirements for customers and the ISO 17025 management system. The Metallographer reports to Senior Analytical Chemist or Analytical Lab Manager as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Selection of metallographic tests required on material in order to meet the needs of internal and external customers. This includes working with members of the Quality lab to determine sample priority, including the Lab Lead and Lab Coordinator .
Perform metallographic preparations, photograph representative sections and take measurements as necessary.
Develop and validate new processes/methods for metallographic preparation and testing, as required to support the business. Participate in improvement projects and problem-solving teams.
Author reports and/or data extracts as needed in order to certify work and support the needs of the business.
Perform surface cleanliness evaluations, contaminant identification, and other work using the SEM and associated software as needed.
Author procedures and work instructions as required in order to document metallography and SEM processes as a part of the lab quality system.
Responsible for maintaining current revision level of industry specification/standards that are applicable to metallography.
Provide assistance with analytical work (LECO, ICP, salt spray, etc) per direction from Analytical Lab Manager or Senior Analytical Chemist .
Proficient in the use of computers, standard office software and systems (e.g. LIMS, SAP), and the ability to perform data entry accurately and quickly with no errors or transpositions.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, technical school, or GED required at a minimum, coupled with 2 or more years of metallographic experience.
Preference for 4 year degree (physics, chemistry, engineering, or metallurgy).
W orking knowledge of ISO 9001 and laboratory quality systems preferable.
Must be very proficient in speaking and writing the English language.
Must possess above average communication and interpersonal skills to provide internal and external customer service.
