Job Description:

A Staff Engineer drives the software development of large-scale distributed enterprise systems from the ground up. Java, Groovy and other languages, along with open source technologies like Apache, MuleSoft, HTTP/REST services, and Vetsource proprietary technologies will be utilized. Solving for fault tolerance, capacity planning, disaster recovery and prevention are critical to this role.  This position requires specialized knowledge of appropriate programming languages and development tools. This is a senior level professional position requiring the ability to complete the most difficult development and programming tasks independently. The Staff Engineer will be called upon to provide guidance and project direction to other members of the development team, and will serve as an expert resource within the team on the functionality of their assigned system(s).

Essential Duties:


  • Help build a world class team and cultivate innovation.

  • Lead designs of major software components, systems, and features.

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve software.

  • Manage individual projects priorities, deadlines and deliverables with your technical expertise.

  • Mentor and train other team members on design techniques, and coding standards

  • Other duties/tasks as assigned

Experience/Qualifications:

  • 10 years of relevant work experience, or 5 years of relevant work experience with a PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.

  • Experience in Software Development in one or more general purpose programming languages including but not limited to: C/C++, Java, Groovy, JavaScript, C#, Objective-C and/or Swift.

  • Experience architecting and developing large scale design.

  • Supervisor Responsibilities:  None


Education/Experience:
  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field.

  • Experience working with one or more from the following: Infrastructure, Mobile Application Development, Front End Development, Security and Privacy.

  • Interest and ability to learn other coding languages as needed.


Working conditions:

  • Ability to work sitting at a computer for long periods of time

  • Environment where dogs may be present (office areas only)
