How will you make an impact?
The Maintenance Field Inspector is responsible for ensuring maintenance performed on GATX railcars by contract facilities and railroads meets required guidelines and requirements in regards to quality, costs and repair content. In addition to this, this role conducts field inspections of railcars to determine end of lease costs, acquisition costs and sale values.
What are your key activities?
Visit and audit contract repair facilities to ensure that required maintenance is performed in accordance with pre-established GATX Rail and regulatory requirements. Ensure that proper repair methods are utilized resulting in cost efficient repairs while also ensuring that quality workmanship is performed. Work with contract shop providers to ensure that they have a thorough understanding of GATX Rail's requirements of maintenance guidelines, procedures, pricing, delivery metrics and quality. Provide thorough inspection reports to management detailing findings, containment and corrective actions.
Assist the Maintenance Management Auditors (FMAs) by conducting on-site reviews of cars in the estimate process; work with FMAs prior to visiting shops to understand their issues and concerns. Serve as the railcar technical expert for FMAs and service delivery, and as such provide maintenance expertise and support to the GATX Rail organization .
Visit and audit railroad interchange yards as requested by AAR Services to ensure that required repairs are being performed and priced in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Perform field inspections of railcars being returned at end of lease from customers as well as inspect potential fleet acquisition and sale cars assessing suitability of fleets.
What is required of you?
Some college preferred
Degree in Business or engineering, preferred.
5+ years' experience dealing with railcar technical issues
Extensive technical and fleet rail car knowledge; prior railcar inspection experience is critical
Extensive FRA, AAR and GATX Rail specifications knowledge
What are we looking for?
Excellent verbal communication skills required to deal many people inside and outside of GATX Rail.
Strong negotiating skills required to address maintenance issues and to resolve customer issues.
Needs to be proficient at motivating external service providers to meet the needs of GATX Rail.
Other things to note:
Approximately 80% travel required.
Physical ability to inspect maintenance facilities and car repair activities.
Ability to climb on to railcars a height of approximately 13 feet and enter railcars with manways as small as 18 inches.
Climbing on to and/or in to railcars multiple times a day; up to as many as 35 cars/day (on average 5-10 cars/day).
Willing to work in all types of weather.
