Garmin's Avionics division has an immediate need for a full-time Electromagnetic Compliance Engineer (EMC) at our headquarters in greater Kansas City to perform testing for product and aircraft certification. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated experience performing set up and running of HIRF (high-intensity radiated field) and Lightning tests, and understanding of integrated avionics systems including I/O (input/output) system architecture and equipment functionality. 

Essential functions include: 

  • Lead a certification test to develop and write test plans for test data that will be used to show EMC, HRIF, and Lightning compliance:

    TSO (Technical Standard Order) - TC (Type Certificate) and STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) requirements of complex integrated avionics systems

  • Perform testing in accordance with DO160 and Garmin procedures

  • Perform hardware and software change analysis under supervision of more experienced EMC Engineers

  • Develop EMC safety assessment and correlate failure modes from FHA’s (Functional Hazard Assessments) to individual equipment

  • Develop and write test reports that correctly and completely captures test results and includes information required to ensure the report demonstrates compliance with EMC requirements

Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering or related field AND a minimum of one-year relevant experience with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Other requirements include: 

  • Solid understanding of Integrated Avionics systems (I/O), system architecture and equipment functionality

  • Knowledge of aircraft wiring types, shields, connectors, and equipment bonding methods

  • Familiarity with aircraft drawing systems in collaboration with avionics installation team

  • HIRF regulatory requirement knowledge 

  • RF technology and electrical circuits fundamentals

  • Proficient with CAD and/or MS Visio

  • Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to work proactively and effectively with minimal supervision

  • Proven knowledge of DO 160 Sections 20 and 22 is highly desirable!
