Flint Hills Resources is looking for an Instrument & Electrical Engineer to join our Biofuels and Ingredients team. This position will be responsible for owning the strategies for all automation, electrical, and instrumentation related assets in the Biofuels and Ingredients fleet, which includes seven ethanol plants totaling nearly $1 Billion in assets.  This position can be located at any of our Iowa (Menlo, Arthur, Fairbank, Shell Rock, Iowa Falls) or Fairmont, Nebraska plants.  Will consider a work from home candidate if in a central location in Iowa or Nebraska.


A Day In The Life Typically Includes:

  • Developing and implementing instrument and electrical strategies for the fleet

  • Establishing and leading vision of the future for predictive and condition-based instrument and electrical programs

  • Leading electrical safety programs as defined by NFPA 70E

  • Mentoring and developing plant resources (Reliability Managers, Plant Engineers, I&E Technicians) to build a culture of pro-active reliability within the business

  • Performing design reviews on capital projects and recommending solutions

  • Participating in fleet utilization improvement activities

  • Tracking and eliminating electrical and instrumentation bad actors for the fleet

  • Leading and performing Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)


What You Will Need:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in Electrical Engineering or Controls Engineering plus 3+ years of experience as a reliability professional on electrical or instrument equipment, OR 5+ years of experience in manufacturing plant instrumentation or industrial power distribution equipment in lieu of a degree

  • Experience in leading projects and implementation of project activities

  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel including management, operating and maintenance personnel

  • Ability to travel at least 20% of the time

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid and current government issued driver’s license

What Will Put You Ahead:

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Prior working knowledge of grains handling and bio-processing equipment

  • Experience with digital control systems (DCS) and programmable logic controllers (PLC)

  • Experience with predictive or condition-based instrument or electrical monitoring or asset health systems

  • 10+ years of operational, engineering, and maintenance experience

  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP)
