Job Description:

Stitcher is the world's largest pure-play podcasting company. We produce dozens of original shows such as Comedy Bang! Bang!, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and Freakonomics through Earwolf and our other brands; we provide ad sales and distribution services to 200+ partner shows such as WTF with Marc Maron and Oprah's SuperSoul Conversations; and we’ve provided a gateway to podcasts for millions of users through our popular Stitcher app. We're on a mission to make podcasts a rewarding part of everyone’s daily lives, and we're looking for like-minded enthusiasts to help.

Our ongoing growth depends on developing strong agreements with outside talent, production companies and other players in the podcasting space. To both guide those deal-making efforts and serve as legal counsel to senior management, we are seeking an experienced Vice President of Legal and Business Affairs, based in Los Angeles or New York. This role will report into our Chief Operating Officer and work directly with our CEO and parent company as required.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Lead overall management of Stitcher’s podcast production, licensing, and distribution agreements

  • Drive the concluding phases of the most complex, multi-million dollar negotiations to a successful close

  • Develop durable legal and business frameworks to be used by business affairs and business development team members, helping them translate business concepts into clear and concise contracts

  • Advise senior management on legal issues related to the company’s production, distribution and ad sales businesses to reduce operational risks and maximize new business opportunities

  • Provide guidance to senior management on the development of processes, structures and policies to help the company scale

  • Working with the office of legal counsel at Stitcher’s parent company, E.W. Scripps, successfully resolve other company legal issues

You’re a great fit if you have:

  • JD (or equivalent) from a top-tier university

  • Member of CA or NY bar in good standing

  • 8-10 years of progressively senior legal and business affairs experience, including significant transactional work in-house at an entertainment, media or production company

  • Strong working knowledge and experience with entertainment law, US copyright law and legal issues relating to production and distribution agreements, intellectual property, media, and digital products

  • A high level of confidence and flexibility in making independent decisions in a fast-paced environment

  • A track record of crafting contractual solutions to challenges created by new / emerging media forms

  • An understanding of the landscape and economics of digital media in general and podcasts / digital audio specifically

  • Experience adapting original IP for exploitation in other media

  • Experience both managing direct reports and serving in indirect leadership roles

  • A strong interest in (or love of) podcasts
