Job Description:

                                            Boiler Operator

 

Job Overview:

    The Georgia Pacific Plywood mill is seeking experienced boiler operators for its operation in Dudley North Carolina. The powerhouse is seeking candidates that want to be a part of a team that will offer training and skill development that can only be gained by on the job training. The opportunity will also provide an avenue to develop skills in various boiler maintenance tasks along with operation of heavy equipment. The boiler is a medium pressure boiler operating at 325 PSIG with a maximum flow rate of 165,000 pounds/hour. The boiler is fired using waste wood debris generated at the mill and from the various processes in the making of plywood products. The boiler is in continuous operations seven days (7) per week and is staffed by a rotating team which consists of one operator and one fuel handler per shift. The operator is a key member of the boiler and must be capable of operating the boiler and making quick and concise decisions to avoid upset conditions.  This operating standard not only applies to the boiler but also includes all the associated support equipment in a manner to ensure safety, compliance and a continuous flow of steam for the Dudley facility. The operator also provides support to the boiler management team towards the completion of department work assignments and projects. Operators must manage the available resource of department manpower to promote a stable work environment. The boiler is the single source supplier of steam energy to the mill and is a critical component for operations.

 

  Responsibilities:    


  • Operate boiler equipment within the established guidelines of the manufacturer and in accordance to the operating permit.


  • Accurately record operating data and field readings.




  • Perform routine water chemistry test to ensure the highest quality of boiler water.




  • Operate water softening equipment or types of water filtration systems, ie: Iron removal systems.




  • Perform routine moisture analysis on wood fuel related to the permit.




  • Monitor ALL boiler instrumentation and make necessary corrections to ensure compliance and safe operating conditions.




  • Monitor operating equipment and report abnormal conditions to boiler manager/shift supervisor and assist with the implementation of remedial actions.




  • Assist with minor repairs to equipment within the powerhouse responsibility.




  • Assist with annual inspections and prepare boiler for safe entry of all areas.




  • Accept ownership of housekeeping assignments.




  • Become qualified for ALL permit requirements. (Safe Work Permits, Lockout/Tagout Permits, Hot work/Fire Watch, Confined Space Entry and Supervisory Level Certifications)




  • Perform tasks on elevated platforms and confined space areas.




  • Develop, Lead and Coach department members for maximum engagement and participation to achieve objectives and goals.



      Safety:



  • Plan, Coordinate and conduct Pre-shift and Post-shift meetings with boiler staff and management.




  • Plan and Conduct department safety meetings.




  • Demonstrate safe work practices and attitudes, follow and obey all safety rules, continuously strive to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors.



      Environmental:



  • Operate boiler systems in accordance to environmental permit standards to ensure continuous compliance.




  • Respond to environmental issues, throughout the mill, in a timely and responsible manner.

     



                                           Basic Requirements:


  •  Strong reading, writing, math and analytical skills.


  • Basic computer skills related to Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.




  • Basic mechanical skills.




  • Ability to perform assigned work tasks efficiently and independently with minimum supervision.




  • Assist with the completion of OBC, operator basic care, routes for boiler equipment.




  • Utilize effective verbal and written communications throughout all members of the boiler team and management.




  • Able to operate mobile equipment (Wheel Loader, Forklift).




  • Able to work in hot, cold and noisy environments.




  • Able to work 12 hour rotating shifts to include weekends, nights and holidays




  • Able and willing to use ALL PPE required by the boiler department.




  • Able and willing to climb and work in elevated areas.




  • Able and willing to perform job duties in confined space areas.




  • Able to lift fifty (50) pounds.




  • Able and willing to work in a team-oriented environment.




  • Able and willing to work in a tobacco free environment.



 

                                         Preferred Qualifications

 


  • Minimum of two (2) years previous experience or degree in Marine or Power Engineering in powerhouse and or recovery/utilities operations in manufacturing or industrial environments


  • Basic knowledge of condensate recovery systems and equipment




  • Basic knowledge of fire protections systems to include hose stations, sprinkler stations and deluge systems




  • Certifications related to boiler operations in either industrial or military applications
