As a member of the Medtronic Diabetes - Continuous Glucose Monitoring Sensor R&D team. You will assist with development, validation and transfer to manufacturing of Medtronic's micro-fabricated glucose bio-sensors. This position is in the Sensor Flex Design & Process Development group of Sensor R&D. This group has three main functions consisting of fabrication Process Development for novel glucose sensors, running a micro-fabrication manufacturing pilot line to support R&D, and novel sensor array design/Product Development. In this role you will support all three functions of the group to varying degrees over time based on business needs with a heavy emphasis on polymer coatings & Process Development.

A Day in the Life

In this role you will have the opportunity to perform independently on large scale projects while balancing leadership responsibilities of said projects. There is a strong technical leadership path available to successful candidates and you will have the opportunity to grow his/her scope of technical and project leadership over time as well as coach junior team members. He/she will also have the opportunity to collaborate in cross-functional development teams as a subject matter expert in process & test method development. There will be communication to upper management on a regular basis through presentations and reports, and the individual must have the ability to effectively convey project updates to internal and external stakeholders (vendors, manufacturing, etc.).

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Develop & utilize technical skills associated with…

    o Polymer solutions, coating/deposition, printing, and other similar fabrication processes


    o Polymer & biologic coatings in a manufacturing environment


    o DRM/DFSS, Six Sigma, Lean and other statistical techniques



  • Provide detailed engineering analysis & documentation to support process development, transfer and ramp into volume manufacturing


  • Participate in the planning & evaluation of capital equipment purchases, modifications, and associated parts


  • Act as a key interface with Manufacturing/Production teams


  • Drive projects to successful completion using Project Management skills


  • Promote a positive culture that focuses on continuous improvement & operational excellence

  • Provides technical and sustaining engineering support in a manufacturing area.


  • Recommends and implements equipment and process modifications to meet quality standards and improve production efficiencies, manufacturing techniques as well as production yields for existing products.


  • Integrates equipment and material capabilities to meet process module target specifications and technology target specifications.


  • Reviews product development requirements for compatibility with processing methods to determine costs and schedules.


  • Interacts with product design and development personnel to ensure that processes and designs are compatible.


  • May develop and conduct statistical analysis or recommend additions to document work.


  • Leads the innovation, development and/or optimization of new manufacturing concepts, processes and procedures for transfer to manufacturing operations.


  • This can include scouting and feasibility work, material selection, process and equipment selection, tooling / fixture and equipment installation and assessment of inputs, outputs and alignment to requirements.


  • Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control and may develop those techniques including the measurement systems.


  • Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.

    Must Have: Minimum Requirements


    Education & Years of Experience Required


    Bachelors of Science in Engineering, Chemistry or Physics with 2+ years of professional experience; or Masters of Science in Engineering, Chemistry or Physics with 0+ years of professional experience


    Nice to Have



  • Experience with coatings, molding, printing, deposition or similar fabrication work experience.


  • Experience with statistical analysis of data (Ex. Minitab, JMP, excel, etc.)


  • Experience working in a cleanroom or sterile like environment


  • Experience with technical documentation (Ex. laboratory notebooks, publications, engineering reports, IQ/OQ/PQ's, Standard Operating Procedures, test protocols, etc.)


  • Experience with various coatings/deposition and printing methodologies including spray, slot, inkjet, aerosol, spin, vapor, etc.


  • Experience with polymer solutions and mixing techniques


  • Experience with polymer/biologic formulation solution control and interactions with deposition/printing processes


  • Strong demonstrated fundamentals in fluid mechanics and fluidic systems


  • Exposure to microfabrication/MEMS processes including photolithography, thin-film deposition, and patterning techniques.


  • Direct experience in process characterization, design of experiments, statistical process control, and data analysis methodologies (T-test, ANOVA and significance testing at a minimum).


  • Experience with gage R&R studies, demonstrating process capability (Ppk & Cpk), and Qualification procedures (IQ/OQ/PQ)


  • Experience with DRM, Lean and/or Six Sigma (ideally Green Belt certified or equivalent experience with demonstrated work in advanced statistics)


  • Experience with MATLAB


  • Prior project management experience


  • Prior experience in a process environment with medical devices and/or pharmaceuticals


  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks & projects and work independently & within a team-based environment


  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
