JOB DESCRIPTION

Associate Systems Administrator Job Requisition

Launched in 2004, the Broad Institute is a non-profit biomedical and genomic research organization spanning Harvard, MIT, and Harvard-affiliated hospitals. Home to more than 3,000 scientists and staff, Broad researchers generate on the order of 20 terabytes of sequence data every day to advance human health by using genomics to advance our understanding of the biology and treatment of human disease, and to help lay the groundwork for a new generation of therapies.

Broad Information Technology Services (BITS) is looking for an Associate Systems Administrator to support data center operations, the underlying infrastructure, and our continuing growth into cloud-based storage and compute solutions. The ideal candidate is a diligent and creative problem solver, energized by technical challenges and high-impact work.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES (BOTH ON-PREMISE AND CLOUD ENVIRONMENTS)

*

Administer computing, data storage, and networking infrastructure supporting services for Broad.
*

Monitor systems for normal operation, backups, security, and performance.
*

Maintain uptime and accessibility of infrastructure hardware and services.
*

Investigates network, server and storage hardware issues and coordinates resolution with vendor service providers, if necessary.
*

Responsible for the deployment and basic configuration of server and data storage and networking infrastructure in the implementation of new infrastructure projects.
*

Automates routine repeated tasks through scripting or other means.
*

Communicate planned and performed changes with the user community.
*

Maintain superior organization and cleanliness of the data center, including upkeep of a current, comprehensive asset inventory.
*

Read, write, and curate technical documentation and SOPs.
*

Contribute to the implementation of best practices and continuous improvement.
*

Contribute to team and organization priorities beyond the scope of primary responsibilities as needed.
*

Occasionally perform off-hours work as needed to accommodate production requirements or respond to high-priority service events.
*

This position requires travel between the Broad s distributed Kendall Square campus, and our Boston-based data center.
*

Other tasks as required by team

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

*

0-2 years of related experience. This is a junior level position with opportunity for growth.
*

Degree in Computer Science or other technical discipline with basic knowledge of IT computing systems, or equivalent training and experience.
*

Familiarity with delivering IT services in a scientific research organization highly desired.
*

Previous experience in customer support, computer operations, system administration, or another related area a plus.
*

Familiarity with command-line interfaces and version control systems is desirable.

SKILLS

*

Enthusiastic learner, able to rapidly gain familiarity with new technologies.
*

Communication skills suited to a professional service-oriented organization
*

Reliably executes established protocols and procedures such as change requests, chain of custody requirements, certificates of destruction, etc.
*

Excellent organizational skills.
*

Demonstrated ability to work with multiple constituents on a variety of projects, flexibility, and willingness to take on assignments are essential.
*

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.
*

Desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
*

Comfort and familiarity with data center hardware installation, maintenance, and decommissions (ie chassis, blades, rack servers, etc).
*

Excellent judgment, strong attention to detail, and a high level of self-motivation is essential.
*

Collaborative and supportive team player.

Cloud services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform)

INTEREST IN LEARNING THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS A PLUS:

Programming/scripting in Bash, Python, and PowerShell
*

Cisco Unified Computing Systems (UCS) and Cisco HyperFlex
*

Jenkins CICD pipeline development and infrastructure automation tools, such as Puppet
*

Enterprise Cloud, DevOps, Databases

EXPERIENCE IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRABLE:

*

Bioinformatics
*

Laboratory information systems (LIMS)
*

Industrial automation

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

*

Must be able to move self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
*

Must be able to perform work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds.
