People is seeking a Senior Writer for our Human Interest features department. The ideal candidate will have a love of news and pop culture, as well as a deep affinity and appreciation for human interest stories: surprising acts of heroism; family losses and triumphs; astonishing love stories; tales of survival and overcoming ordeal; heartwarming reunions and enduring relationships-in short, stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Successful candidates must have excellent writing and editing skills-with a knack for working quickly and with accuracy under tight deadlines. Regular duties and responsibilities will include: Writing 1-2 print stories weekly for the magazine, using either your own original reporting, or filed transcripts from freelancers; coming up with fresh, engaging human interest, health and sports-related story pitches week in/week out; coordinating as needed with photo and art on visuals and layout design; helping the senior editor field story pitches from freelancers and making sure assignment requirements are fulfilled and done on time; editing shorter stories from time to time, and helping to manage larger edit packages.

In addition, candidates will be expected to contribute-and help develop-creative ideas for special issues and breakout editorial packages, taking into consideration opportunities across all platforms, most especially digital and video.

Embracing the 24/7 news cycle, they should be a motivated self-starter who's well-versed in reporting/writing breaking news stories; a team-player with strong communication skills and a cool head under pressure; and a skilled journalist with an eye for the special details and information that interest People readers.

Education:
Bachelors' degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent work experience
Experience:
8 years of experience, including a year of digital experience
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent writing, editing and communication skills
Strong knowledge of news, pop culture, and the People brand
An idea generator who can think of new, fresh story ideas
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and work well with a team
