Position Description

We are currently seeking a Bioinformatics Specialist to maintain, troubleshoot, and extend a wide variety of software used for assay design and for analysis of qPCR and NGS data. The assay design and data analysis software supports both internal product development needs and customer-facing services. The position requires a combination of strong programming ability, analytical skill, and genomics knowledge.

Primary responsibilities are:

- Rapidly support data analysis and custom assay design needs of R&D scientists, sales team, and customers.

- Troubleshoot existing assay design and data analysis pipelines that use a combination of in-house code and open source software from the academic community.

- Continuously develop code, database, and computational infrastructure toward the goals of (1) extending assay design and data analysis functionality for new business needs and (2) reducing resources needed for manual troubleshooting by improving system design and error handling.

- Work with qiagen.com web site development team as needed for troubleshooting existing services and launching new products.

- Work with the manufacturing software team to develop clean application layering of responsibilities between assay design and annotation versus oligo synthesis and manufacturing.

- Manage a large MySQL database server, primarily used to store assay designs.

Position Requirements

- BS or MS degree in bioinformatics or computer science.

- At least two years of industry experience is preferred.

- Proficiency developing Python code in a Linux environment. Experience with PHP, HTML, CSS, and SQL are also desired. Ruby, Perl, Java or C++ experience are also helpful.

- Experience using reference genome and transcriptome models, and associated annotation.

- Experience developing and managing databases, e.g. MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL.

- Experience administering NGINX and/or Apache web servers is a plus.

- Experience using major cloud provider tools (e.g. Google Compute Platform, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services) is a plus.

- Experience with container technology (e.g. Docker), version control systems (e.g. git), issue tracking systems (e.g. redmine), testing frameworks, performance testing, and unit testing are also helpful.

Personal Requirements

The successful candidate must work daily directly with product development scientists, sales and marketing teams, and customers. The candidate must also be able to develop, test, and support high quality software in an environment with very few professional software engineers.
