Job Description:

General Summary:

Maintains and assists in management of medical equipment by installing, calibrating, repairing and inspecting medical equipment and solving the most complex technical problems in the field. Responsibilities include to perform duties related to system support and maintenance, provides technical support service, repairs and preventive maintenance as necessary to maintain the safe operation of BWH's biomed integrated Systems, and advanced patient care technologies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Following departmental Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) procedures, inspects newly acquired medical devices and systems for safety and function and attaches and assigns appropriate control numbers and labels to clinical devices. Acquires the necessary information for accurate database inventory entry.
*

Conducts complete performance assurance and electrical safety testing. Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance on medical devices as required. Assists in the development of testing protocols.
*

Responds to medical equipment problems in clinical or research areas, evaluates, troubleshoots and corrects problems up to and including those requiring novel solutions and expert diagnostic skills, involving unfamiliar equipment, and having the highest level of acuity and complexity. Determines the need to remove and/or replace malfunctioning medical devices from service and implements accordingly.

Performs repairs and calibrations with the highest degree of complexity or requiring expert diagnostic and repair skills.
*

Participates in installations and updates of medical devices when required, including those requiring software revision. Provides technical feedback for device evaluations.

Perform preventive maintenance to integrated systems, including safety for end user use
*

Manage workload priorities with or without supervision
*

Support, troubleshoot and perform maintenance on advanced patient care technologies, such as the telemetry EA system, CICs, network switches, anesthesia machines, dialysis machines and/or water system
*

Perform repair, support and scheduled maintenance on advanced patient care technologies
*

Attends and satisfactorily completes advanced training courses on operating, testing, maintaining, and repairing medical devices. Disseminates this newly acquired knowledge to team members, department, and clinical users as appropriate. Leverages this knowledge to improve our procedures and systems for managing and maintaining medical equipment.

May assign, direct, and inspect the tasks of BMETs and coordinate implementation of projects.
*

Using data indicators, intuition, and/or other resources, identifies system, safety and quality problems, suggests solutions, and provides information that leads to change in department and on teams.
*

Under supervision of an engineer or department leadership, may assist in and/or conduct investigations of clinical incidents involving medical equipment.
*

Perform other duties as assigned by management.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

*

Some experience in supporting for Biomedical and Computer Systems
*

Must have a high level of competence in repair of mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic, and/or computer medical technology to sufficiently diagnose and repair devices and systems.
*

Ability to participate in the regular rotation of on-call responsibilities for biomedical engineering or integrated supported systems.
*

Some knowledge and understanding of preventive maintenance process, accreditation standards, technology assessments, etc.
*

Some knowledge of operating procedures for clinical and ancillary hospital services and how departments interrelate
*

Some knowledge of or exposure to electronics and troubleshooting skills
*

Willingness and aptitude to learn, analyze, isolate and correct malfunctions in biomedical systems

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/JOB CONDITIONS

May work in clinical or repair facility with exposure to biological contamination, e.g., blood, and hazardous electrical or mechanical energy, e.g., high voltage. Periodic lifting of heavy objects, typically not exceeding 75 pounds/person

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR REGISTRATIONS/OR REGISTRATIONS

PREFERRED: CBET certification / technical Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience

EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED: Typically requires up to 2 years of related experience

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

Maintains accurate and current records of equipment activities and inventory and replacement parts

HOSPITAL WIDE RESPONSIBILITY

Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/Partner: follow safe practices required for the position, complies with appropriate BWH and Partners policies and procedures, fulfills any training required by BWH and/or Partners, as appropriate, brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.
