The Department of Clinical Sciences (DCS) within the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to excellence in veterinarian training, and conducts both clinical and pre-clinical research that advances patient care through discovery and innovation. Our research encompasses a broad spectrum of hospital and laboratory based studies. This position is an opportunity for a Licensed Veterinary Technician to assist two Principal Investigators (PIs) within DCS in their clinical and applied research efforts. This position entails diverse duties including clinical trial coordination, client communication and patient enrollment, sample collection and processing, and laboratory analysis and data evaluation. The successful candidate will work closely with the PIs, with other members of DCS, and with hospital and laboratory personnel to assist with a range of studies. You will be responsible for:
- Organizing, coordinating and conducting clinical trials as a liaison between clients and the PIs
- Reviewing and understanding trial protocols including study timelines, inclusion and exclusion criteria
- Creating client consent forms, recruiting clients for clinical trials (including screening and enrolling patients)
- Scheduling participant appointments and communicating clearly and openly with clients to obtain informed consent
- Preparing client records, creating data collection spreadsheets and managing internet-based clinical trial software
- Maintaining constant communication with owners throughout trials; continually updating clinicians on enrolled patient status; assisting with follow-up information, and scheduling re-check appointments as necessary
- Coordinating study agreements, forms and contracts with sponsors and the Office of Sponsored Programs
- Tracking project budgets and providing account management for current clinical trials and clinical research
- Supporting clinical trials and procedures by patient assessments by securing and bringing animals to examination rooms; restraining animals; explaining animal status to owners; assembling required supplies and instruments; assisting with administration of anesthesia; monitoring anesthetic procedures; obtaining vascular access; obtaining blood samples; obtaining urine samples, cleaning surgical sites; maintaining sterility; obtaining, verifying and administering medications.
- Collecting relevant tissue samples during surgical procedures and necropsies; assisting with experimental surgical procedures involving cadavers
- Processing specimens including labeling, cataloging, storage, reference laboratory submission and shipment
- Conducting laboratory assays including, but not limited to, blood gas analysis, point-of-care hematology, biochemistry and coagulation analysis, cell isolation, platelet aggregometry, ELISA assays, fluorescence assays, flow cytometry, real-time PCR - specific training will be provided where necessary.
- Ensuring quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; calling for repairs.
- Maintaining the laboratory and laboratory equipment by cleaning, washing, sterilizing laboratory ware; keeping the laboratory supplied by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Contributing to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established professional and hospital standards, policies and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Promoting the ethical conduct of research by reporting good faith suspicions of research misconduct
- Ability to work one weekend day.

This position is a one-year term with the possibility of renewal.

Required Qualifications:
Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology and NYS licensure as a Veterinary Technician required. One to two years' experience as an LVT with a basic understanding of animal physiology and clinical surgery/medicine is required. Technical skills including, but not limited to, obtaining blood, tissue or urine samples for diagnostic procedures and/or storage. Some prior clinical or diagnostic laboratory experience is required, but assay specific training will be provided. Must be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding environment handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines, while paying close attention to details.Must be able to work independently while demonstrating a high level of initiative. Working knowledge of computer programs such as Word, Excel and other data entry programs; impeccable record keeping a must. Excellent communication, organizational, deductive reasoning and pattern recognition skills are essential. Ability to work one weekend day and be flexible with work day start and finish times. Must possess the ability to restrain and potentially lift animals weighing 20-50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Three to four years' experience as an LVT in a clinical setting desirable.
Clinical research or clinical trial experience desirable.
Laboratory management experience desirable.
