Zingerman's Mail Order is hiring seasonal crew to work in our kitchen and preparing meals for our staff!

About Us
Zingerman's Mail Order is the online and catalog shop for Zingerman's. We ship great food and gifts all across America, everything from bread and cheese to cured ham and tinned fish.

The holidays at Zingerman's Mail Order are crazy but fun. We grow from a crew of 100 to a swarm of nearly 500. People come to work here from all walks of life. Moms, dads, students, retirees, landscapers, dancers. Some people are in between jobs. Some people, this is their first job. Some folks come because they want to work with us for the long term. Some, it's just a little job for extra Christmas present money. Any reason is fine with us. Nearly everyone who works here now started as a part of a holiday crew at one time or another. We'd love for you to join us.

What kinds of things do you do in this job?
Employee meals are a benefit for our employees. You will be part of a team, preparing and serving awesome, locally sourced meals for Zingerman's Mail Order staff. In addition to employee meals, you will also be responsible for producing some of our most popular foods made in our kitchen.

Washing dishes
Prepare and cook foods for each day's menu
You will set up & tear down for each meal
Serve meals to our staff
You will clean like you never have before!
Sweep & mop floors
Work from opening and closing checklists
Spiced pecan production
Red Rage BBQ Sauce production

Safety at Zingerman's Mail Order
The health and safety of our staff is our greatest priority. We are adamantly following the guidelines and directives from the CDC, Washtenaw County, the State of Michigan and other experts. We are focusing on screening, sanitizing and distancing in our building:

We are screening everyone who comes to work each day for symptoms.
All staff members wear masks at all times inside our buildings.
We are sanitizing all touched surfaces every two hours.
We have set up safe working distances for every employee
We practice social distancing of a minimum of 6 feet from each other

This is a seasonal position that runs October through December 2020.

What does it take to get hired in our Kitchen and Employee Meal department?
There are lots of things we are hoping to find in anyone who applies. (We've listed them below.) But there are two musts:

You must have experience cooking & preparing food in a commercial kitchen
You must meet schedule availability requirements to be considered for this position.

You must be available to work one of these shifts:

Day Shift: 9am-5pm
Evening Shift: 4pm-10pm
Overnight Shift (December only): 4:30pm-2:30am

You must be available to work a minimum of 3 shifts per week

When does this job begin and end?
Work starts in October and ends on or around December 30th, 2020
Compensation is $15.50/hour

The Performance Expectations for this position can include:

Cleaning up after every meal, including washing dishes. We all take turns washing the dishes.
Preparing and serving meals buffet style (over 400 people a day in December)
Store and label leftovers for employee consumption
Keep employee break room and refrigerator clean and stocked
Follow checklists and sop's in the kitchen
Keep kitchen, prep areas and equipment clean
Deliver amazing service to our staff
Making our famous Zingerman's Spiced Pecans

The Success Patterns for this position are:

Comfortable bending, lifting and being on your feet for an 8 hour kitchen shift
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Food prep experience required
Must love food!
ServSafe certification preferred
Have reliable transportation to and from work
Ability to read and speak fluently in English
Must be punctual and have excellent attendance
Must meet schedule availability requirements
Must be available to work a minimum of 3-5 shifts per week October-December

What and where is this job?
This is a job in our warehouse located at 610 Phoenix Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. Our warehouse is open seven days a week and, at the holiday, 24 hours a day. It is where we pick and pack orders for our customers. It's where we wrap bread, make gift boxes, cut cheese and cook spiced pecans in our kitchen. We are on the AATA bus route.

Will I get full time work?
You can expect part time hours September through November. Full time hours are available during December.

Work starts in September and ends on or around December 30th, 2020

Can I apply for full time work after the job ends?
Yes, we encourage it. We'll have a limited number of both full & part time positions at Mail Order and elsewhere in the Zingerman's Community of Business after the holiday.

We don't have a typical interview for our holiday crew. Instead we have skills tests for you to show us your kitchen skills, like making an omelet. We invite an applicant once or twice a week that usually happens within days after you apply.
