This role leads the Product Design team which reports through our Product Management organization within our Legal Solutions business. As a Product Design Manager, you will be the champion of the product design organization, leading a team of product designers who are supporting our highest priority business initiatives. The role will require you to operate at both a strategic and tactical level. As a strategic leader, you will align the goals and processes of the design team to accomplish key business priorities, while ensuring user experience and product quality remain the key focus. This includes establishing standards to effectively evaluate and measure the impact of product design on product usability and client satisfaction.  As a tactical leader, you will actively participate in product planning, stakeholder meetings, and design reviews to help balance workload and clarify priorities so designers can provide the critical deliverables that fuel the product development process.

Essential Job Responsibilities 



  • Provide strategic direction and tactical support for the design organization.




  • Align design team goals, processes, and resources to accomplish key business priorities.




  • Balance team workload and manage competing priorities to clarify expectations and drive toward timely results.




  • Effectively advocate for the design team by partnering with Product Management, Product Development, Client Services, Marketing and other key areas to ensure the design team is adequately represented and empowered to impact the client experience. Facilitate cross collaboration wherever possible.




  • Manage team talent through onboarding/offboarding, mentoring, and training opportunities. Forecast and escalate resource needs.




  • Partner with HR to draft job descriptions, review titles and compensation with the aim to keep Epiq competitive when drawing top talent. 




  • Supplement design team staffing as needed by hiring contingent staff and/or proactively producing design deliverables such as (but not limited to) personas, wireframes, prototypes, design specifications, usability studies, etc.  




  • Compile and present a monthly product design update to executive leadership to highlight team accomplishments and evaluate progress toward annual goals.




  • Manage software subscription renewals. Ensure that design team has all tools and resources required to succeed.




  • Review and approve timesheets.




  • Evaluate individual and team performance and coach when necessary to promote performance improvement.




  • Provide design consultations in vendor discussions and relationships




  • Occasional travel as needed (> 5% of the time).  




  • Other duties as assigned. 



Requirements for the role include: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  



  • Bachelors degree or higher in User Experience Design, Interaction Design, HCI, or related field.  




  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing a design team.




  • Deep understanding of the product design process and how it aligns with the agile product development process.




  • Deep understanding of how to apply the methodologies of user-cantered design and research to business problems.




  • Experience “shipping” product.  




  • Excellent oral and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. 



Preferred Qualifications: 


  • Expertise in accessible/universal design practices. 

  • Expertise in building/managing design systems.

  • Design thinking certifications such as LUMA or other collaborative facilitation techniques.
