Job Description:

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Perform the duties of an Equipment Operator for the Streets Division in the Public Works Department.  Summer work hours are 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. four days per week.  Winter work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. five days per week.  Required to work on-call and overtime as needed.


The salary range for this position is $ 19.86 - $ 28.80 per hour with a hiring range of $ 19.86 - $ 24.33, depending on qualifications and experience.
Position will close to applicants at 12:00 P.M. M.S.T. on Monday, December 14, 2020.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Operates a variety of equipment such as tractor with drag box, tractor/mower, pavement roller, crack-seal machine, forklift, street sweeper, tandem-axle dump truck, dump truck w/ snowplow and spreader, liquid anti-icing/deicing truck, water truck, pothole spray patching machine, motor-grader, front-end loader, Roto-Mill, and Asphalt paver on a limited basis.

  • Operate snow removal equipment on a twelve-hour shift, as designated by supervisor.

  • Hauls, rakes and shovels hot mix asphalt and road base.  Fix potholes.

  • Jack-hammers asphalt to prepare site for patching.

  • Drives truck to deliver personnel and equipment to work sites; ensures truck is stocked with necessary materials and tools; cleans debris from work sites.

  • Prepares vehicle mileage reports.

  • Performs routine maintenance on assigned vehicle.

  • Performs a thorough pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspection of assigned equipment.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge, skills and abilities:



  • Must possess knowledge of road construction, repairs, and general maintenance procedures. 

  • Must possess skill in the operation of light to medium equipment needed to construct, repair and maintain roads.

  • Must possess considerable knowledge of snow and ice control techniques, materials, and be able to operate snowplows with anti-icing/de-icing equipment.

  • Must work safely and follow all established safety rules, regulations, and procedures.

  • Must be able to follow oral instructions and communicate effectively with co-workers, lead workers and supervisors.

  • Must have a basic knowledge of the City’s geography.

  • Must be able to work odd hours, weekends and overtime, particularly during snow season.

Education and/or experience:
Previous experience in motor-grader operation, front-end loader operation, tandem-axle dump trucks, mowing operations, spraying weeds with chemicals, snow removal operation, paving and patching, crack-sealing, and rotomilling operations are highly desirable.


 


Licensure and/or certifications:
Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver's license with an Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements. Must be able to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license within six months of date of hire.  Traffic Control Technician and Flagging Certificates highly desired.


           


Material and equipment directly used:
Air compressor, jackhammer, pickups, hand tools, shovel, pick, asphalt rake, motorized hand tamper, weed eater, welding equipment, hot mix asphalt, cold mix asphalt, road base, concrete, telephone, calculator, photocopier, fax machine,  snow plan, maps, computer skills, and two way radios, etc. Must use personal protective equipment as required.


 


Working conditions and physical requirements:
Requires pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, moving and placing objects (up to 50 lbs.) and performing strenuous manual labor to perform the essential functions of the job.  Manual dexterity is required to complete work tasks through safe and proper operation of hand tools, power tools, motor vehicles and construction equipment.  Must be able to work in adverse conditions such as:  extreme weather variances; heavy traffic and equipment noise; close proximity to moving vehicles, around fuels, hot oil and asphalt mixtures and fumes. Must be able to reach the Street Division’s office/shop located at 2525 West First Street within 30 minutes.  Required to be on call for after hour and weekend emergency duty approximately every 12 weeks.  In anticipation of adverse weather conditions, preparedness for call back is expected.
