The Interior Architecture program at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad understanding of the discipline of Interior Architecture as well as exceptional teaching, research, and leadership abilities. We encourage candidates with multidisciplinary interests and expertise to apply.

The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design offers its students and faculty a platform of integrated disciplines - Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Industrial Design - that work together to negotiate the complexities of contemporary design practice, making extensive use of our state-of-the-art digital and fabrication facilities. The discourse of Architecture at the scale of the Interior has undergone unprecedented change. Having emerged as a specialization, Interior Architecture engages trans-disciplinary knowledge within a new and blended territory. The Interior Architecture program at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design investigates the discipline by positioning our program in the re-use, adaptation, and transformation of existing buildings. Poised at the intersection of architecture, conservation, spatial design, ecological performance and social agency--the trans-disciplinary nature of our curriculum offers students an extraordinary education where innovation, technology, and the art of 'making' converge. Our program focuses on the technological, material, ecological, and social promise of Interior Architecture in course work, design research, history/theory, fabrication seminars and workshops, community outreach, publications, and exhibitions. The program is commencing its effort to secure CIDA accreditation. We are the founder and publisher of the International Journal of Interior Architecture and Spatial Design (ii).

We are searching for a colleague who values collaboration, scholarship, and making with an ability to contribute to multiple levels of the Interior Architecture curriculum while promoting design excellence. As the newest program at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, this position offers candidates an opportunity to craft creative curriculum and methodologies which will place our program at the forefront of academic discourse In Interior Architecture.

Candidates will be expected to teach design studios, conduct seminars and/or lecture courses, and to apply their research expertise to other programs and initiatives within the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design. Responsibilities will include a combination of courses, workshops, and studios requiring the integration of analog processes with digital visualization and fabrication skills. Opportunities are available for faculty members to partner with various community organizations and college research centers. Faculty members are expected to provide service to the Interior Architecture Program, the College of Architecture and Design and the University. Members of the Interior Architecture faculty contribute to both the Advanced Spatial Design (ASD) research group and the International Journal of Interior Architecture & Spatial Design - published by the University of Houston Atrium Press.

Qualified candidates must hold at least one degree in Architecture at the graduate or undergraduate level. Candidates must hold a Master's degree in a design-related field, with an exemplary record of professional practice, scholarship, and teaching experience. Candidates must demonstrate superior design and representational skills, as well as clarity in communication and openness to collaboration. Candidates with a strong commitment to innovative teaching practices, cultural awareness, critical practice, theoretical scholarship, as well as various specializations including but not limited to lighting design, acoustics, materials research, advanced visualization, digital fabrication, and sustainability, history and theory of Interior Architecture, as well as candidates with NCIDQ Certification, or who can demonstrate a qualifying path to NCIDQ Certification, are encouraged to apply. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
