Purpose
The Department of Energy's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Manufacturing Systems Design Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking an internationally recognized researcher to conduct projects, expand research, and manage R&D in the development of projects to support the manufacturing R&D portfolio. The specific focus of this job posting is to fill a research need in the area of design of advanced manufacturing systems. The researcher will lead ORNL's efforts to become leaders in both the design of advanced manufacturing systems and the use of advanced manufacturing to solve complex interdisciplinary design challenges.

Main Responsilibities / Duties
- Conduct R&D projects and lead the expansion of R&D in the design of manufacturing systems.
- Lead efforts to develop state-of-the-art systems
- Lead and manage large technical projects related to advanced manufacturing
- Pursue industry partnerships for the development of new technologies in advanced manufacturing

- Guide work of and mentor students and interns
- Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities
- Interact with existing DOE and DoD sponsors in pursuit of new programs

Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics, or Computer Engineering with a focus on design of complex multidisciplinary engineering systems.
- Experience with advanced computational design techniques like Topology Optimization and Generative Design is preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and leadership are required.
- Knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is required.
- The demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets is required.
- Frequent domestic travel and possibly international travel is expected in this position.
- This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
