Departmental Overview

The Berkeley People Lab aims to transform the public sector by producing cutting-edge research on the people in government and the communities they serve. Using insights from behavioral science and evidence from public management, we design and evaluate initiatives that can solve urgent public sector challenges. Projects range from: how to recruit and retain a diverse workforce, how to reduce burnout in front line workers, how to increase take-up of social programs, how to increase trust in government and how to improve government programs for vulnerable populations. The vast majority of studies involve a survey experiment or a randomized controlled trial (RCT), and direct collaboration with government agencies and other stakeholders.

This position involves working with a diverse team of scholars, led by Professors Elizabeth Linos and Amy Lerman, who are passionate about conducting applied, data-driven research on key priorities of government. The selected candidate will work directly on research projects, and will also help build the People Lab's profile through policy-focused reports and presentations.

Responsibilities

* Manages relationships with government partners, including regular engagement and client management, troubleshooting issues, and being the main point of contact for those partners.

* Conducts econometric analysis using STATA or other statistical software packages on administrative data sets and/or other incoming data. Is primarily responsible for cleaning data correctly, doing primary analysis, and presenting the results in various formats (tables/graphs etc).

* Works with faculty PI to design and implement rigorous research designs, including but not limited to - randomized control trials (RCTs), survey experiments, and behavioral interventions.

* Supports authorship of academic papers, policy reports, and other publications by conducting literature reviews, editing or drafting text, preparing manuscripts for publication.

* Seeks funding opportunities and prepares relevant grant proposals in concert with principal investigators.

* Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

* Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis, including cleaning new data sets and presenting data in various formats.

* Demonstrated experience managing client relationships, managing projects independently, meeting project timelines, and communicating with internal and external stakeholders in a productive and timely manner.

* Ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects with minimal supervision, including strong time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines required.

* Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, including exceptional writing skills required.

* Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail required.

* Ability to work both independently and as a team member required.

* Undergraduate degree in public policy, economics, statistics, or a related field is required and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience writing successful grant proposals preferred.

* Experience working in the public sector or on public sector challenges preferred.

* Experience working with large and complex datasets preferred.

* Experience working on randomized controlled trials or behavioral economics projects preferred.

* Two years of relevant post-baccalaureate professional experience preferred and/or related graduate degree.

Salary & Benefits

This is a monthly paid (exempt) position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience within in the range of $60,800.00 - $70,000.00.
