Job Description:

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab s (LBNL) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) Division has an opening for a Data Scientist to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will leverage computational biology, comparative genomics, and multi-omics analyses and modeling to advance algal and fungal genomics at the US Department of Energy (DOE) JGI. You will work on the annotation and analysis of algal and fungal genomes and multi-omes. You are responsible for large-scale genome analyses, comparative genomics, and custom analyses in support of JGI user communities. You will work on problems of a diverse scope; exercises independent judgment and recommends solutions for user support for internal and external collaborators at every stage of annotation projects to ensure clear and timely communications, user training and support, data distribution and analysis. You are directly involved in tool development including validation and optimization of annotation and analysis tools and development of new protocols and scripts for genome analysis.

What You Will Do:

*

Work independently with little supervision on problems of diverse scope; demonstrate good judgment in identifying solutions.
*

Based on available datasets, phylogenetic position, and other factors, independently determine appropriate genome annotation and analysis strategies.
*

Lead and perform complex data analyses; perform and troubleshoots genome and multi-ome annotations and analyses using JGI developed and publicly available tools and pipelines.
*

Develop and present reports for annotated genomes, multi-omics datasets, and developed models for scientific publications and presentations.
*

Closely work with user communities to enable community-wide genome analysis, train users on the use of JGI Genome Portal tools and provide guidelines for manual curation.
*

Support internal and external collaborators with data exchange and custom data analysis.
*

Work on validation and optimization of the annotation process, annotation pipeline, tools and methods for gene prediction, annotation, and analysis.
*

Provide training, for students and post-doctoral fellows.
*

Assist in the preparation of grant proposals.

What is Required:

*

Minimum of 5 years of related experience in biological data analysis with a Bachelor s degree in Biology, Life Sciences, Bioinformatics or related field; or 3 years and a Master s degree; or equivalent work experience.
*

Solid background in algal/fungal biology, molecular biology, and genomics.
*

Experience with programming (Python, Perl, etc.), databases (SQL), and genomics data analyses in Unix environment.
*

Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills to independently make sound judgments and recommend creative solutions to complex problems.
*

Demonstrated knowledge of advanced bioinformatics methods and tools for genome annotation, analysis, and comparative genomics.
*

Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills to effectively work with large user communities.
*

Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to address user needs in an effective and timely manner.
*

Ability to work in a diverse team environment.
*

Extensive experience with bioinformatics analyses of large scale genomics data.

Desired Qualifications:

*

Ph.D. in Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Life Sciences or closely related discipline.
*

Experience in modeling biological systems using multi-omics datasets.

This is a full time, 1 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
